My Vigor 130 died after a botched firmware upgrade (I upgraded to 3.7.5.1 then backtracked to go back to 3.7.5 and that is when it died). I've got my backup modem working (HG630b) but I've noticed that Telecom is selling the Huawei HG659b which is apparently 802.11ac - what is the coverage like, particularly 5Ghz? I'm looking at upgrading my setup but good 5Ghz is a must given that I'm in a swamp of 2.4Ghz networks.

Although 5GHz won't have the range or distance of 2.4GHz, you should have "better" throughput and signal because of reduced noise/congestion/interference. If your modem is located in a different room, then you'll likely have issues connecting to 5GHz wifi because it doesn't go as "far" as 2.4GHz.

I have 5GHz on the Fritzbox 7390, located centrally in the house. It works fine through three walls out to my attached office, and outside the house still on the property, but way out back not sure if it'd work. Fortunately I can fall back to longer range 2.4GHz if required, but I've never noticed that happening.

My prior router was an Airport Base Station 802.11ac and I used the 5Ghz channel without too many issues - I live in a pretty small house (two bedrooms) so the signal getting through walls was a non-issue. I'll be passing that along to my brother for his house and I'll keep the HG659b for my own (just ordered it today).
