True, but the servers shouldn't keep going down like this, Spark is one of the largest companies in NZ after all, and their CEO is one of NZ's highest paid CEOs.
It is also a bit of a problem though when your web hosting provider Orcon doesn't provide a SMTP server, and requries you to use your ISPs smtp server.

The sad thing is that people still use xtra email.

Yahoo must be giving this service away for free for Telecom to want to stick with it..

Personally I only use it for as disposable email address, and an Orcon email account that needs SMTP. The SMTP server is reasonable when it is working, because it doesn't appear to have a restriction on the size of email you can sent, like gmail does for example

Anyone having problems with Spark email at the moment? I am currently getting the old popup box saying service is unavailable again for the last hour, and nothing on the spark network page. They seem to have change their network status system, as the icons on the homepage have disappeared, and if you click the new link, it takes ages to load the new status page.

Yes, the "Service Status" link seems to be broken like a few other things at Telecom these days. It looks like there were so many "broken, working on it" icons, so often on the Telecom homepage, they've decided to hide them one layer done. Rather ironic that they're also now broken.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 300 performed here so far.

I look at it like this:

Sending email is part of the ISP service (network access). They block port 25 so you can't send mail yourself, the SMTP MTA they provide (provide being a very flexible definition currently) is simply a proxy to replace that. Sure it has the ability to store, filter and forward messages, but these days unless you're a spammer those functions aren't particularly meaningful.

Receiving on the other hand is more than just an access function, because unless you want to run a server, there needs to be somewhere to store the messages. And if you want to use your own domain name, that's a hosting function.

I wonder why noone from Spark has posted here about the ongoing problems with email. Very unusual for noone from an ISP to make any comment.

probably because the problems are out of Telecom's control so they wouldn't know what to say, other than the standard "our technicians are looking into the issue"

Problems now seem to be restricted to Yahoo's telecom service - the non Telecom yahoo service was fully restored a couple of weeks ago and hasn't exhibited any of the problems again.

But they still have the responsibility, as they have chosen to subcontract out to another company, but Spark still have to support it. It is really the same with Chorus, where chorus provides the network backbone, but Spark still have to support it, and take ownership of the problem, when there are problems.

Yes but... they don't have any responsibility to  check/post on Geekzone because Geekzone is not an official Spark/Telecom support channel.

Maybe not, but even on their official support channels they won't shed any more light on the cause of the ongoing problems. Really the only thing they have told me is that Spark email can be temperamental at times, and to reduce the number of checks it is doing per hour to 3 checks per hour (once every 20 minutes), which isn't a solution and doesn't solve it. If it is 'temperamental', then that is a problem at their end supplier, which they need to fix. We aren't able to contact Yahoo directly, as we aren't a direct yahoo customer, it is a resold service.
Any other ISP on here will chime in on any problems if you post in their forums.

SPARK: "The transformation is underway to become a digital services company ..."

So they're transforming into something they evidently don't have the capability or capacity to do, like email. Well played Telecom.
