I have just switched to Spark in the last few days on the unlimited ADSL plan. I am using the bundled Huawei router. 

The last 3 nights between 5.30pm and 6pm the ADSL connection has dropped and then reconnected at half the download speed. (I have been doing frequent speed tests as we are getting poor speed before it halves!)

I understand that it is peak time and it may slow down, but this seems to happen like clockwork. Spark have told me that it is the traffic management causing the speed issues, but I read a lot of stuff on here saying they aren't managing the unlimited plans yet?


I have tried isolation tests and moving jacks etc, but nothing has helped. Any one have any ideas?




Edit: House is less than 10 years old, wiring should be good. Neighbours either side of us getting good speeds with no issues.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

At 26dB attenuation, you should be getting at least double the downstream sync rate you are getting. This is almost certainly a physical wiring issue. Do you have access to another modem to rule that out?

Why do you say house wiring should be good?




Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

At 10 years old, I'd put money on it not being that good at all. Master filter would sort it of course!

Considering yours is bad, house's iver side are good..

Ild say infact, your house wiring is not good, and could do with a Master Filter.

I just assumed that being a relatively new house the wiring should be new... Therefore fine.. Obviously this was wrong. 

We had wireless internet before hand and that was working fine a 10mbs down and 10mbs up. 


I asked the Chorus tech about a master filter when it was being installed, he reckoned we didn't need one.

Aaaaahh!

Joking aside, it will ensure the best possible connection for an xDSL modem, well worth doing in most cases.

The issue (even with 10 year old wiring) is it wasn't designed for xDSL frequencies - voice only - so the higher frequencies of xDSL suffers. Also, at 10 years old, there's every chance of a corroded connection if some moisture has got in that will cause the issues you are having.

hmm, extra work, or leave the connection as "working fine"...


not to mention likely he wasnt sent out to do one..

That's pretty similar to the Huawei, so rules out the modem as the issue.

Almost certainly a wiring issue then. Do you know where the line comes in to the building (demarc)?

Yeah, it comes into the garage I believe. It is split to all the other jacks in the house via a crude patch panel.

Since you have a fritz, how about a screenshot of the spectrum tab.

Geekzone has a Max-Width css tag imposed on images now, that frustratingly trims pictures.
