This issue is a little old now so might not be applicable here, but is it a Windows 8/8.1 with the Technicolor TG589 modem?  Does manually setting the Spark DNS servers on the device fix the problem?

Jase2985: can you inform us how we can test this to be able to provide you with data?

If you're a Windows user, something like this might be of assistance.

I can't see why it wouldn't, it's just something that does DNS queries.

What exactly "Doesn't work"?

You won't be able to test against our DNS servers unless you're on our network.

Did some testing today, ran DNSQuerrySniffer for 4 hours while browsing.
I am on a VDSL unlimited plan connected at 49/10 DLM1, I have manually entered sparks 2 dns servers into my laptop. Currently im pinging nzherald.com and its taking 7ms and the ping on a speedtest.net is 6ms, and sparks speedtest on their website is again 6ms

There were 1780 DNS lookups, and of that 1780 lookups, 318 lookups were >20ms from when they were sent to when the reply was recieved.
the range of the 318 >20ms was 20ms to 3012ms. and of those 318 >20ms, 134 were >200ms.

so 18% had a response greater than 20ms, and 7.5% were greater than 200ms

TBH im not sure how it all works im just providing some information so you can see what some people might be experiencing.

I have a bunch of routers that can't (rarely) resolve our name currently using Spark DNS..

Any other DNS works (of cause IP addresses work on Spark) so something is up..
This started for us at 5PM last night and is still an issue, I would like to get some more info, we are getting some bad feed back from customers for something out of our control

My issues have been going on for a lot more than a week but only off and on. I bought a new modem in early January to try to resolve it.

Generally speaking where there's smoke, there's fire. Nothing is showing up in the monitoring I have looked at so far, and DNS volumes etc all look normal, but I will bring this thread specifically to the attention of the relevant engineers tomorrow.

Any SPECIFIC reports of replicable issues would be appreciated. (I know it doesn't look like it's an easily replicable issue at the moment but a bunch of "It's a bit funny for me as well" messages add nothing to the investigation)

Cheers - N

Is there some way I could test from my Macs? I don't use Windows much so its not going to help terribly.

If its any help, I've also had this issue since yesterday and switching to Google DNS or UnoTelly DNS fixes it. Seems to work if I switch back after, although temporarily. Almost 100% random so quite hard to replicate unfortunately.

9am to 9pm 23/4/14

1987 unique requests
1335 less than or equal to 20ms    67.18%
632 greater than 20ms  31.82%

206 between 21ms and 99ms = 10.36%
148 between 100ms and 299ms = 7.45%
269 greater than 300ms = 13.54%

334 requests were served by 210.55.111.1
1653 requests were served by 122.56.237.1

I will try it using googles DNS servers another day

just a quick test using ns1/ns2.ihug.co.nz. my ping to them is 7ms

733 total
639 less than 20ms = 87.18%
94 greater than 20ms = 12.82%
43 between 20 and 299 = 5.86%
51 greater than 300ms = 6.96%

little bit of a difference to what spark is dishing out

will do some more testing tomorrow/in the weekend

spark results again in what is not a peak peroid

24/4/14 530am-630am

757 total unique DNS entries
512 less than 20ms = 67.64%
245 greater than 20ms = 32.36%
190 between 20 and 299 = 25.10%
55 greater than 300ms = 7.65%

still about the same percentages (less than 20 and above 20) as a 12h day, but well behind the IHUG DNS servers

There's discussion of the issue on NZNOG now, just in case you haven't seen it already.
