Ugh the comments like "free WiFi for a year" and "the guy must have been really sparked up".

Don't people understand still spark is just the service provider? How many times does it have to be said?

Was going to link to this also, good stuff.

Portrait video actually works if you are sending to another phone, but that's about it.

But then you have to turn your phone sideways to watch jt. Lately I've found viewing vertical videos less of a hassle since my phone is always portrait unless I'm trying yo watch something longer than a minute or two

No, they don't. People are ignorant, and often also stupid. Sounds like this guy got his problem sorted in the end, shame a lot of morons who've seen it will blame Spark rather than the installer specifically.

They filming of the video is not important, the state of the *cough* professional install is.

Not ignorant, not stupid. Example a Doctor is a Spark customer, contacts Spark to have UFB installed. Spark starts the process. People turn up and finally the jobs done but botched. Who should he call?.... Spark. In these
cases the main contractor and the only person the Doctor can correspond to remedy is Spark so to him it Spark that is at fault not some nameless sub-contractor.

I tend to both agree and disagree with this.

It would seem the person wanted their ONT installed in the hallway, which seems a very strange place to have it (there in nowhere to put the router except on the floor). Depending on the type on contrsuction (such as a concrete pad) that was potentially the only way that cable could be run, and surface cabling is a perfectly acceptable method of running cable.

What I don't understand is why the drill hole is there, or why the drill hole on the other side of the wall doesn't match up in the same place. Had it not been for the drill hole this install would be no different to many others - but the location of the ONT certainly raises plenty of questions that we don't know the answers to.

nakedmolerat: Ultrafast did one for us in Tauranga. It was a marvelous job.

One more thing, why would you put the ONT in the hallway??? That low?? Where kids/pets can cause damage to it???

Our UFF install (over a year ago; Whanganui) was also excellent.  Cable runs through the roofspace into the top of a cupboard that's in a nice central location for our Wifi AP.

It would have made more sense to put the ONT in the garage, I wonder if the customer asked for it to be installed in the hallway and if the installer told them how the cable would be run?  Also seems strange they didn't raise any concerns during the install but when the installer had left they post a video to facebook...

I think social media in some ways has made people very fearful of any face to face conflict, but they are more than happy to complain using facebook/twitter after the event.  Solving the problem at the time (or at least taking steps to mitigate any issues - eg telling the installer you are not happy with the way they are running the cable and ask for alternatives) would mean less problems further down the line.

sbiddle: There are no other cables - and Chorus won't run internally inside walls (and never have done)

Chorus did an internal install at my parents' place in Whakatane with no fuss. Admittedly it's not directly inside the walls, but rather runs through the roof cavity and down into a cupboard, but my point is that you can't see the cabling.

That seems a very sensible way to run it. Or under the floor maybe, if the under floor region is big enough to be crawlable.

Yeah I'd like to know why the decision was made to locate the device there.  Was it someone in the flat (assume it's a flat) or did the installer chose to do this for some reason themselves?

Not having been through a fibre install myself, what do you get out of the ONT? - an Ethernet port?

Is there any support to provide wifi somewhere by chorus/spark?

Reason I ask is that with the (now older?!) ADSL/VDSL you get a device located in a sensible position (from a wifi perspective) in the house, close to anything that will need a wired connection etc.
What's the approach given to give this to a customer, as in is the wifi modem located further into the house etc?

Cheers all.

The ONT has four Ethernet ports and two phone ports but typically only one or two of those ports are used. Wi-Fi is completely separate. At my place the ONT is in the garage and the Wi-Fi AP is in a central cupboard.
