For the past few weeks there have been Chorus trucks rumbling up and down the streets in my neighbourhood, digging trenches and laying cables. I suspect they are installing UFB but am unsure. Had a look at the Chorus website and the area I'm in (Cloverlea, Palmerston North) is stating that expected UFB date is some time in 2016. Is there any way to confirm what they are doing, or is there someone in the know in Geekzone that could shed some light for me?

Im not in the know, but digging trenches and laying cables sure sounds like laying fibre. I'd expect the dates are conservative, so as to lessen not meeting expectations. From my experience it was just a few short months from the start where you are at, to me getting it connected, so the 2016, now sounds like it will be late 2015

Did you get the "Your streets ahead" flyer yet? (Bah humbug at the grammar of the pun, lol)

Just curious cause we got that a couple weeks ago.  No idea when they actual installation starts for our road, but the chorus website was updated to Nov-2015 when I checked.

If you go on the Chorus site and enter a specific address of a house in the dark blue shaded area, it will tell you to the month when UFB is coming.

Here are three examples from the Cloverlea, PN area:

41 Benmore Avenue, Cloverlea, Palmerston North

NETWORK UPGRADE SCHEDULED

  • UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps by Sep-2015

33 Raglan Avenue, Cloverlea, Palmerston North

  • UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps by Aug-2015

22 Tararua Terrace, Cloverlea, Palmerston North

  • UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps by Jun-2016

Chorus website would be a good place to start; I'm still curious though on a couple of things though:

1) When you get the "Your streets ahead" letter, what sort of timeframe is there between getting it and actual work starting
2) The chorus website says "by Month-Year" but is it sometimes available before said date?

1) there is no set timeframe, could be a week could be a few months, then add the time it takes them to do the work, document it then make it avaliable it could be 6-8 months.
2) the majority of the time no, but sometimes you could get lucky

Thanks, sounds sensible\reasonable, and pretty much what I suspected (IIRC you work in the industry so is that based on first hand experience, or is it more anecdotal?)

(Apologies for thread hijack OP :) )

I'm in Geraldine Crescent and yes, the Downer guys are going flat out at the moment installing the UFB 'empty tubes'.

On the Chorus website you should see a specific month for your address at the top, mine is Aug 2015.  Sometimes you need to hit enter on the address on the site for the more specific info to come up.

You'll see if you activate the 'Fibre' layer on the map, you can see the blocks and boundaries they work to.  Drag the pin around on the map to see dates change.

What street are you in?

Nigel

Hi Nigel. Yeah I'm in Geraldine Crescent too, down at the Drury street end. Checked the Chorus website and it states June 2016. Changed the address to where they are currently working and it states August 2015 :-(.
Went and had a chat with one of the guys digging the trench, and he said that is where they are stopping for now. Our end of the street is on a different cabinet (??) and will be gotten to at some stage. Bit bummed by this news....

Oh bugger!  Bit more of a wait then.  Or a long range wi-fi link to some nice person who wants to share their 'network' with you.  wink

That means you're not scheduled until June 2016 at this stage.

I even asked the Chorus guy politely if they could push the cabling they were doing down just a little bit more to fit my house in. He gave me that look of "Yeah i haven't heard that one before".....so probably no. He did mention that the City Council was pushing to get UFB installed faster in this area and thinks that our area should be done in the very near future. Fingers crossed.
