Received the following response from Telecom this morning.  It seems there is a 40c surchage when using a Telecom Mobile to call Aussie at least (they didn't call it a surcharge, but its 40c more than calling from a landline).

For those lucky enough not to be charged the surcharge, make the most of it while you can!

I have called the Yabba team and they have advised me of the following: (These
will be updated online very soon)

Telecom mobile to Australia - 50c
Telecom mobile to Australian mobile - 70c
Landline to Australian landline - 10c
Landline to Australian mobile - 30c

Once again, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Once I hear back from
our Yabba team I will arrange for a refund to be placed on your card for the
calls in question.

The bizarre thing is that "Customer Care..." had to call Yabba which is where the confusion started for you?  It still doesn't make sense.

I wonder when those rates came in and why the website was not updated...  still not sure if comcom will be able to take action, but it is poor if they are the current rates and Telecom staff as well as the website were not updated.

I guess we shall see what happens on the Yabba rates page...

FYI   T&C :

Terms and conditions: Calling rates include GST (if any) and apply 24 hours per day. All calling rates are valid at 1 December 2007 but are subject to change at any time. 0900, 0800, 018, 0161, and 059 calls cannot be made with Yabba®. Any outstanding balance on the card will expire on the date shown on the card if not used, or one year after the card is last used. Credit balances are not refundable and cards will not be replaced unless faulty. Telecom business and residential Call Savings Plans, capped calling rates and price specials do not apply. Other network phones cannot be used to make calls. Rates include calls from a Telecom mobile phone, except where specified.Where calls are made within or between overseas destinations, the calling rate applied will be as though the caller first called a New Zealand landline and then called from New Zealand to the applicable overseas destination 24 hr Customer Services call 0800 4 Yabba (0800 492 222).Yabba is not liable for any charges imposed on calls made to access Yabba Services. Calls made from other mobile phone providers may incur additional fees and charges, payable to that mobile phone service provider.

If what Wongtop was told in regards to rates is true then the T&C's will need to be updated.

And the latest from Telecom ... it seems it is like many here thought, the Yabba system can't tell if a phone has been ported onto the Telecom network.  Hope they get it sorted soon, as the site does state "Telecom mobile", without limiting it to non-ported numbers. (I wonder if Vodafone customers with 027 numbers get surcharge free calls??)

Thank you for your email.

The website and documentation is in fact correct. Unfortunately the YABBA system
does not know what 021 telephones are now on the Telecom network, so they are
not able to treat them the same as 027 mobiles. We have forwarded this on to
get this sorted. In the meantime, Our support team have arranged a refund for
the surcharge.

"There is no surcharge from Telecom mobile phones when calling overseas"

Is it possible that this sentence is actually referring to making calls TO an overseas number from your Telecom mobile, rather than when you are USING your Telecom mobile overseas?
