On my laptop, YouTube videos would fail to play properly on my BigPipe connection, but work on Spark.

 

It may be different for others, but given DarkShadow's tip-off, from my point of view it would appear that there's something going on in BigPipe's network that's interfering with QUIC connections to YouTube. No idea about BigPipe's internals... Firewall configuration? Caching? If QUIC-enabled browsers are redirected to different Google servers, perhaps even routing?

I turned off that QUIC thing as someone suggested, it seems to work fine now and even google.play music now plays, where as before turning it off I couldn't even start to buffer a song.

Hi,

 

we've only had maybe 15-20 tickets raised about it.

 

Although of course we don't know how many customers are having issues that never end up contacting us about it, and there are still lots of 'false positives' where people report a Youtube issue but it turns out to be their wifi or torrenting flatmate clogging up their line etc.

 

 

 

Update for everyone else:

 

Network team are working with Google about it - seems likely something cache related but not sure what yet. Google have asked us to collect a bunch of info to pass onto their engineers which we have been doing. 

 

Looks like disabling this QUIC thing might be a "quic fix" (pun intended).

 

So far, we haven't had anybody report that it doesn't work for them. (If you try it and it doesn't work - please let us know)

I can confirm that disabling "Experimental QUIC protocol" in Chrome has fixed the issue for me.

 

I am on big pipe and I have not logged a ticket.  So you can count me as another customer with the issue.

It is strange - with me YouTube is working totally fine. Honestly, look at the connection speed on this 4K video:

 

 

I however have a static IP - so does anyone with problems have a static IP too or are you on CGNAT?

What browser are you using?

 

I had this issue on Chrome but disabling QUIC sorted it out.

 

I have had no issue on my other computer which is using FireFox

I use Google Chrome - on that particular computer it was on Windows 10 however...

Count me as one of the people who haven't reported it. I didn't realise it was an ISP/Google problem to be honest, until now...

 

In my case it's both Youtube and Google Play Music that stop buffering. Both work fine now, after disabling 'QUIC' in Chrome. In Safari, Google Music was fine anyway, but both browsers were having buffering issues with Youtube, intermittently over the last couple of weeks.

 

That's my tuppence worth in the ring. :)

Yeah I've got a static IP and still had issues.

 

My google chrome quic setting was set to "default", after setting it to 'disabled' I don't seem to have issues anymore.

Have you tried the work around suggested earlier in this thread? Someone else has said that it helped them.

One thing to try if you're on Chrome:

 

Go to about:flags

 

Find Experimental QUIC protocol and disable it.

 

Restart Chrome.

 

Another potential solution is to try on another browser such as Firefox. It doesn't use the QUIC protocol, which seems to be related to the issue.
