I have to ask. What does the "Hey I am a useless planet" button do?

It's where your notifications will go when we send them

e.g. "planned maintenance at 3am on 15th May 2016"  and stuff like that.

When tapping the left of each bar to enable (not intuitive) - it works on press rather than on release. Same with expanding the info.

I have fat fingers, save yourself some requests by triggering buttons on release.

I'd prefer if the whole button was click-able and the on release function expanded the info.

Hi all,

you should have noticed a new version of the app was published today.

feedback welcome.

Here is a list of the changes:

  • Improved user experience for the Mode Selector feature.

    • It is now much clearer that setting a mode is 'processing'
    • the turn mode off button changes according to the mode that is currently set.
  • Setting the priority is now much faster. Used to take 10 seconds now takes <1 second.
  • Usage data bug fix. Data is now more accurate and shows usage over the last 5 mins.

Android "oh hey I'll update this unreleased beta app in the background whilst you're connected to WiFi, don't mind me..."
iOS "wut is a beta?"

Updated fine in iOS from TestFlight

Pretty impressive I have to say, definitely a first in NZ to be able to prioritise traffic like this - Just wish we had it back in the days of dialup!

I can imagine being very useful in a house full of people or a flat to still let people Skype while everyone is downloading Ubuntu

I'm not sure I can notice any difference but maybe my test is invalid.

I'm on ADSL, wired connection.

I was trying out Netflix and then Fast.com and when nothing else was happening both were reporting about 15 Mbps.

I then kicked off a single Ubuntu torrent and gave it time to get up to speed. Fast.com results dropped to around 750 Kbps-1000 Kbps.

I then switched my mode to Streaming expecting to see an improvement in fast.com results and the torrent slow down but I couldn't notice any difference really except for normal fluctuations.

I tried switching mode to Downloading and also didn't notice any difference.

Modem is a Netcomm NF8AC.

currently it takes about 10-15 seconds for the modes to switch (this will be fixed in the next day or two to make it take only a second or two) so if you are running fast.com immediately after making the switch so I wonder if that might explain it.

If you do it again, please try also switching to browsing mode, wait 15 seconds, then run a speedtest.net test

(could you also report whether you are using a different DNS  or some other method to access US netflix or not. I don't know if it would make any difference, but possibly)

thanks.

Trying again with the new version of the app and still not seeing any effect.

Not using any alternate dns or vpn etc.

Kicked off a torrent, waited until the traffic monitor showed a big jump in downloading so I knew it was seeing the traffic type correctly. Then I set mode to Browsing and ran speed tests for a few minutes, they are hitting about 1.6 Mbps and the torrent shows no sign of slowing down. If I pause the torrent speedtest jumps back to 15 Mbps. Tried the same thing with Fast.com again and mode of Streaming with same results.

The traffic monitor is showing the traffic types correctly, i.e when I do speed tests the Browsing come up and when I do Fast.com tests Streaming comes up its just that mode changes show no sign of slowing the torrent.

I'm not too worried about it as UFB is getting very close here but happy to do any testing you need. I have novice Wiresharking skills.

Just taking advantage of the Steam summer sale and noticed that Steam downloads are classified as Gaming on the traffic monitor. Would it be possible to have Steam downloads classified as Downloading?

The refreshed app was a bit bumpy changing modes today. Once it changed it was fine and performance watching the rugby tests last night was great.

The one thing that would be great would to be able to schedule modes - if I could set the evenings to be streaming and overnight / daytime to be downloading or uncontrolled that would be brilliant.

Most of the UI issues already raised, a couple of suggestions on functionality:

1. Allow more than one option to be prioritised.  For example, I'd like to priorities Communication and Browsing.

2. A better option than 1. above would be to simply allow the user to put the list in the order of priority they want, perhaps with high priority and low priority options to 'group' the really important options and the really unimportant options.

I sent some feedback via the app and it seemed to get sent through the normal Bigpipe Support mechanism with a standard replay email relevant to a connection issue and not one accepting feedback for the app - somewhat confusing if I didn't know this was a Beta app.

I'll beta test a Windows 10 Mobile app if you are planning one at some point. :)

no immediate plans at this stage.  Windows mobile usage within bigipe customers is very very small. It's not realistically a high priority to do a win10 mob app

How do you know which of your customers are using Windows Phones? I am a BigPipe customer

and have never been asked what sort of cellphone I use.

For your information I have three

Windows Phones, two running Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 10. It makes me very cross

that I cannot get certain apps for my Windows phones. Please reconsider your decision.

@Morgana42 the main problem here is windows phone marketshare has dropped below 1% - so they can likely count the customers with Windows phone on their fingers. Whilst the cry for Windows phone apps is quite vocal it makes no financial sense to develop for this platform and test full functionality, invest in test devices, testing frameworks and ensuring compatibility with API changes of both major platforms (iOS and Android).

I was a Windows phone user for a number of years but really had to switch away due to lack of apps and Windows Phone wasn't improving, it was declining likely due to customers of the platform like myself.

Whilst the hardware and OS is great, you'll really have to have more customers on that platform to consider development - I'd say once BigPipes app is due for public release they might consider releasing it onto their customer portal. But, unless if windows phone users want to invest the $1000's to develop such an app on this platform you really have to just take what you can get. No reason to be cross about it, the reality is if you want such specialised apps either get much more people onto a platform or move away from it yourself. BigPipe is also quite a small ISP in the reality of things and for them to release such an app is a great step forward however they can't cater for everyone on every platform.

Interesting. Have you passed this feedback on via the app feedback mechanism?  Would be good to look at your individual case and see why it doesn't seem to be working.  If you haven't already sent it via the app, could you PM me the email address so I can link it back to your account and take a look.

I wonder if it is a misalignment between the 'virtual pipe' we create and the actual pipe you have.  If the virtual pipe is set as bigger than your actual pipe, then our system won't see your connection as being congested even if it actually is, and therefore the prioritisation won't trigger.

e.g. your actual pipe is 15Mbps, but for some reason our system sees it as, say, 20Mbps,  then even when pushing 15Mbps through it thinks "no congestion here, let all the traffic flow equally")

Could you try a couple of things for me please

1) turn all modes off (Important: do this by selecting the 'turn mode off' button, not by selecting a new mode)

2) wait a minute or two,  then try running all your tests with the various modes again.   Turning off all modes (rather than selecting a new mode) should trigger the virtual pipe to be created freshly and so should create it at the correct size

If that doesn't work,  try rebooting your modem first,  then turning mode off and on again.

Let us know how you get on please :)
