The rumours are that later tonight (NZ time) Yahoo will confirm Verizon will acquire the company.

We all know tech companies buy and close services with a "we will use the technology to provide something later" approach - which sometimes (most of the times) doesn't happen.

Speculating... what will happen with Spark Xtra email if Yahoo closes shop and Verizon decides Yahoo Mail is not something they want?

Is Yahoo Mail part of deal? What would be the best outcome for Spark?

Your best guesses - until we know more?

Surely Yahoo Mail will have to be part of the deal as it largely accompanies the main Yahoo portal/homepage. As they will be merging the AOL and Yahoo properties into a single platform I can't see the Yahoo mail backend going any where any time soon.

As for whether this will impact on Spark's ability to deliver yahoo/xtra email I don't think it will in any way again as long as the Yahoo Aus/NZ portal remains. Even if it disappears the Yahoo Mail technology and services will be licensed to some subsidiary which will in turn deal with those ISPs.

Maybe it could be an incentive for Spark to get rid of the ridiculous, awful, low res abomination of a Y!Tworld icon that they force on owners of Spark sourced Samsung devices.

does Spark really need to provide an email service? Outlook and Gmail do a good job.

Maybe they'll resurrect Yahoo Xtra Bubble!

Or maybe not...

A lot of tradies have xtra.co.nz scrawled on the back of their truck. As do a lot of oldie's use their xtra account.
