If the last 30~40mbit are a deal breaker for you, then you can spend twice as much on a router $200ish, I don't see how its gonna change your life much though if you already got 900mbit.

Yeh it could be your PC's CPU or your network card, or software/drivers you run on your machine. I wouldn't really be expecting anything higher than about 950mbps. As the layer2 restriction over gigabit ethernet is only gonna pull about 950mbps.

Yeah thats why I was looking at the ER-X. I don't care about the last 30~40. As others have said, it's really just he epenis when looking at that last little bit on a (gigabit) residential connection.

I just want to make sure that the ER-X will at least deliver what I was seeing when connected to the ONT from my PC.

Are you running stock firmware on your WNDR3700? If so, and before you spend any money, you might want to try Advanced Tomato firmware instead and enable CTF. My R7000 went from ~400 Mbps to ~900+ by ticking one little box! Disclaimer: I've not tried Advanced Tomato on your model router. Results may vary etc.

ER-X = not suitable for anything over ~500Mbit.
ER-Lite = Pro at Gigabit.

Erx is fine. Usually average about 800mbit on a stream.
If you got a lot of nodes behind it then it will be a bit crap. But for 1 or 2 pc it will be fine. Don't use it for switching either.

The ER lite is a mean unit. But I'm probably gonna look at buying a RB3011UiAS. I tried my luck with the comp but didn't quite get there. It's about $80 more then the ERL. If you don't need the extra ports then get the ERL.

My old NF4V is really screaming along, way faster than I thought it could handle, took a week or two before I got this level of performance but am really happy with the speed considering the router.

i'm not very network savvy but if I was to upgrade to gig would the generic bigpipe modem be capable of getting 900 down? or what do you guys recommend?

It'll be fine. You might need to confirm your computers are good enough though.

Hi all. I have recently moved from South Africa to NZ (Auckland). Coming from 10mb ADSL, naturally the first thing I did on arrival was order Bigpipe UFB Elite which was installed yesterday! :) Unfortunately for me, we are still waiting for our container to be delivered and I therefore don't have any means to do any real-world testing. My head is literally spinning with questions! Any answers to the below questions or general advice would be greatly appreciated!

My router (when it arrives) is a Mikrotik RB951G. I've used RouterOS for many years and I don't know how I would ever live without the powerful features it provides. If I am correct, I can pretty much plug it in with the old ADSL settings (pppoe interface) and I should be good to go. However from what I am reading, the RB951G doesn't have the necessary CPU chops to realise the full power of UFB Elite. Is this true? I've read some stuff about enabling what they call "Fast Track" which will help greatly, but it limits my ability to use NAT and other firewall features (basically neutering the power of RouterOS).
The RB951G is only Wireless-N and I therefore won't be able to come anywhere close to seeing the gains on my wireless devices. However since the wireless devices in my house will consist of phones, tablet and chromecasts, I don't think this is a big deal. Where I want/need max UFB speed is on my desktop and my home-server which will be connected via Ethernet.
I tested the connection by dialling the PPPoE from my laptop which was plugged directly into the ONT. I saw speeds of 480/480 from various speedtest.net servers, and about 500mbps on fast.com. Whilst these speeds are amazing, they are about half of what others in this thread are seeing on the same plan. Any ideas where the bottleneck could be?

In short, I am trying to decide whether I need to just go out and get myself a new 802.11AC router that is tried-and-tested on UFB Elite. I will miss the power of RouterOS, but there's not much point paying for "gigabit" fibre when my hardware can only deliver a fraction of that.

As I said - any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your laptop.

Start by confirming your laptop can actually transfer at gigabit speeds over a LAN.

Definitely an option (and a good one now that you mention it!). But I'd only be comfortable buying one that is endorsed by another UFB Elite user. Any suggestions?

I use an RB3011 as the main router. I then use it to manage various other Access points ( including my old mikrotik)using CapsMan

Good advice.

I posted a typical speed test back on page 3 with my Mikrotik RB2011. I was consistently seeing about 400Mbps with this extremely cheap router and the best ever was well over 600, (fast path enabled and about 30 firewall rules and 3 different VLANs). Having said that, real world performance seldom comes close, the best I've seen is Steam peaking around 34MiBps so a bit shy of 300Mbps.

As a sort of update generally on my setup on Bigpipe Elite, for a few months I considered upgrading to the RB3011 but these are very expensive and there was no real need. In the end I ditched the Mikrotik for a Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite 3 last weekend as these seem to be the router of choice around here and are 2/3 the prices of the RB3011.

It didn't end up being much of an upgrade in the end, I now see about 600-700Mbps for speed tests (hardware offload for forwarding, PPPoE and VLAN) and it's barely any faster if I rule out the fibre connection, e.g. if I plug my laptop into a guest switch port (different VLAN & subnet) and run iperf to my media PC (traffic must traverse the ERL, router-on-a-stick style to get to other network), then I see 600-800Mbps depending on direction. For comparison, if I plug into a switch port that is on on the same VLAN & subnet (no traversing router, just the switch) iperf clocks about 950MBps in either direction.

Without hardware offloading, the ERL only does about 160Mbps. I see a similar performance hit on the Mikrotik without fast path. FWIW, I found the interface on the ERL a lot simpler than the Mikrotik, but was surprised at how laggy the ERL web & ssh interfaces are compared to the Mikrotik.
