My flatmate (who's the Spark account owner) spoke with them when we had a line fault.


The Spark call centre employee offered him a "free modem and free cordless phone". He asked if by accepting we would be locked into a fixed term contract and they assured him no.


Currently we have a regular cordless phone on the copper cable and a Spark modem on ADSL.


The items have now arrived (minus a SIM card listed in the packing slip). The modem is a Huawei LTE CPE B315 and the cordless phone is Uniden DECT 1715+1.


I see the modem is for 4G. Does that mean Spark are trying to get us off the copper landline?


Does it need a SIM card?


Our 4G service is patchy (with most carriers) as although we are in Auckland city we are tucked away from line of sight of Sky Tower.


Has anyone else had this offer? Do you think it would be without a fixed contract?


And lastly, we were thinking of upgrading to fibre anyway. Would you recommend fibre or 4G or staying with ADSL?

Looks like you got moved to fixed wireless (4G). The sim card should be alredy installed inside the modem?


If you can get fibre then of course get it, as it is clearly superior.

Sounds like you've agreed to be moved from copper to fixd wireless broadband.


Answering "what's better between ADSL, fibre or 4G" isn't really a question. There are pros and cons to all. Clearly fibre delivers the fastest speeds but it doesn't mean it's the best option for you.

Hope the account holder was advised of the data cap per month and Fibre is king

It looks like the Spark employee has arranged for your flatmate to be upgraded from copper service to our fixed wireless service. From what you're saying, it sounds like your flatmate may not have realised that they were agreeing to this.


If your flatmate does not want to switch to the wireless service, they should NOT plug the new modem in at all, otherwise it will auto activate, and the copper services will be cut off. Your flatmate should call Spark immediately to arrange for the upgrade to be cancelled and for the modem to be returned to Spark.


Could you please send me a private message with the account number, and I will ascertain whether a contract has been applied or not.
