for UFB yes
Thanks Jase. BP wouldnt sell me one for $100 lol, I did try the been with u 4 years and this is a new service, but they said no. Some things they arent great with. Like when they changed to static IPs from non public dynamics, I didnt ask them to change me to static, had an issue and asked for a free IP addy change which they wouldnt do, which I thought given they made the change not me and Id been with them 3 years they would do. Oh well, they good on support.
Ok so when I try to use ethernet Im getting latency error on speedtest, just realised its due to the mrs notebook going through RNA back to her works DMZ/firewalls etc and back again.
So for tonight I have no means of testing the speed. Ill get an adapter tomorrow and do the ONT test as well then.
I did run a GIS test though, and normally something that takes 30 seconds to load, loaded in 1 second. So that tells me there is definitely a speed increase. Will the ethernet dongle to be sure though, just not sure what to buy as Ive never used/needed one.
What would be the best Ethernet dongle for my devices be? The old one is just USB 2.0, the newer one has USB C type 1 (10Gbps).
As this is a one off use, cheap as possible would be good. Do Dynamic make a budget USB to Ethernet dongle?
Wow they are all at least $25 upward. I think doing the ONT test will be good enough for me. If I know its my device then Im happy with that and will likely buy the Huawei router. I might keep my Netcomm as we might be moving north next year which may mean back to dsl.

Budget ethernet adaptors often can't get anywhere near the rated speed, just FYI.

In that case, should I just assume that the Mrs Work Notebook which takes 1 minutes to run some GIS items, is doing them in 2 seconds via ethernet now is good enough to believe Im getting close enough to my 100Mbps?
Ill get the 5Ghz router and retest my Wifi then.
Its truely odd Uploads arent impacted and Im getting 20Mbps every time up.
Plus these ethernet Dongles start at $25 for the cheapest one, ouch. Id rather invest that into an AC adapter for my old notebook and or a budget used dual band AC external Antenna router on Trademe.
I think when the chorus techs are here the should be checking the ONT themselves
On my old Dell I just got Ping 18 ms, Download 5.63 Mbps, Upload 2.78
In same place I rang it speedtest on the new samsung toughpad, ative 2 i think its called. Anyway
Ping 3ms, Jitter, 2ms, Down 18.3Mbps, Up, 21,4Mbps
First time Ive gotten faster upload than my cap. So clearly my old intel centrino wifi chip is holding me back on the Xps. It is 5-6 years old to be fair. So regardless of getting a new router Ill get an AC usb dongle for the XPS Notebook. All 5 other notebooks max out at 30mbps and 20mbps. As do the 2 tablets and 4 phones. However Im thinking of getting a new iPad the one that takes a stylus, and a keyboard, getting rid of the old one and this old XPS notebook. I know the new iPad runs AC, so that should be fine. I rarely use my phone, I cant stand browsing on a phone. I tend to use my old spark zte tough phone because the battery last a couple of days easily. Sometimes 3.
Not your fault at all, but this thread drives me absolutely nuts
To troubleshoot stuff like this you just want a semi-modern desktop computer with Ethernet. All these old laptops, new laptops without Ethernet, tablets, cellphones, smart TVs - and none of them can actually be relied on to measure the speed coming into your house over the fibre! Every house should have a desktop PC, in my book

i hear ya, I know dongles are our future but why are there still some ports on devices i dont need that an ethernet could be useful, its like when countdown finally do the right thing and force people to either bring their reusable bags or suffer a reasonably large sum for buying a plastic bag, and final plan i believe is to cut them out so your only option is to buy a reusable bag. anyway the point is change management. something we all probably have done multi week courses on. nobody likes change, but we like it less when they dont stick to the plan. i can accpept all or nothing, i cant accept, this half way designed of ports on even todays ultrabooks. only apple (shudder) of all the builders deliver 1 option. Shame they havnt put anything but a dual core and no dGPU in their PRO 13, pro at being Pro bably a pile of smelly fresh dogg dooo doo.
So Im talking with an ex colleague today, hes still stuck on being asked to come in and try and help fix the NBN mess rofl.
I teased him a bit about my connection.
He thinks I should go an Asus device like the ac68u
Whilst I was debating this, knowing Ive been out of IP for 12 years and hes been a SA for about that long, my mind drifted off onto these Asus dedicated gaming and media consumption routers like the AC88u with its Aimesh and AiProtection (not realy a need as its TM) and the WTFast game accelerator.

Of course Im just looking and drooling. But the hg659 is a pain in the butt to get right this second as people want $50, $30, or the $1 start arent for days away.....
Getting a little restless waiting. For $50 though used surely there are better options like the TP - Archer series?
Absolutely bad timing missing out on the h659, i missed one for $1. Im just going to have to wait for others.
Is there another device I should look out for?
cheap and plentiful and a good device to test on.
for that sort of testing with those specs not really. just get one for the $20 buy now
Ok I was just wondering if some of the asus dual band 11.ac models with aerials might be better, they go for about $40

I just read the Router guide again and it says the HG659 is not suitable for netflix unblockers, by this does it mean DNS services? Why is this? This could be a dead end as I use a DNS service.

No cheap HG659s right now anyway.
So far have a Linksys xac1200 for $50 and a Netcomm NF8AC for $60......
