Having problems with our broadband disconnecting. At random the modem will drop connection with the exchange. It's a problem that started a while ago.

When it first started we got a techie over, he tested the lines, intstalled a splitter box, and actually replaced the phone cable from our house, 50m or so down the road. None of this solved it, so we thought we'd try another modem, so purchased a brand new D-Link DSL-502T from trademe. This new modem fixed it for aroung 6 months, but it started again.

We thought that mabye the D-Link modems that telecom supplies are just crap, so we purchased a Linksys WAG200G ADSL2 router. It arrived today, got it up and running, and guess what it does!! It still disconnects, no way near as frequently though, around every 1/2 hour.(It was every 5-10min with the d-link modems). We do get way better speeds with the new modem though which is a change (can sit on 250-300kB/s down until it disconnects)

Has anyone come across this kind of problem before? I'm thinking it's not something to do with the computer as it appears to disconnect from the exchange.

What info should you know? hijackthis log file? We're in napier, and on the xtra 'unlimited download' plan if that's any help.

Thanks heaps, Nigel.

What line stats do you actually have, ie line attenuation, sync speed, noise margin, in particular the download figures, these can be found in teh ADSL stats page of the router. Also do you have a vague idea of how far you are from the exchange. Obviously these figures are for when the connection is going.

This here?

DSL Status:Connected
DSL Modulation Mode:MultiMode
DSL Path Mode:Interleaved
Downstream Rate:7616 kbps
Upstream Rate:160 kbps
Downstream Margin:13 db
Upstream Margin:31 db
Downstream Line Attenuation:24 db
Upstream Line Attenuation:7 db

I'm just under 750m from the exchange according to google maps :)

I also have just updated the firmware from the Linksys website to the latest available.

Hi, 24dB attenuation indicates more like 1.7km, so the line may follow a totally different path than you think or you have a poor connection somewhere creating a unexpected loss. Other than that those figures should give a good stable connection. Can you change from multimode and lock it to just G.dmt.

One would assume that if you have had a central filter installed and checked by a competent tech then wiring issues should not be of concern, however if it has been good in the past and now showing issues purhaps a joint on the line is giving problems.

Ok, yeah that does sound right when you think about it.

I've changed to G.dmt.. What's this doing?

Here's the settings from the setup page of the router.. Everything seem right? here
