Howdy - Just wondering if I am being pedantic or if I actually have an issue here.

I live rurally in Manawatu and on a 240GB Wireless Broadband Plan that I am generally happy with.

The issue I have is that once the limit is reached and we do run close occasionally with 3 kids and On Demand streaming etc that a !0GB/$10 is automatically added and you cannot opt out of. Once this data is added, and it could be at 22:30 on evening of monthly refresh this specifically paid for data is not able to be used.

I would think that it would operate the same as mobile data add ons and that different caps would run concurrently until they are used?

I understand that the main 240GB doesn't rollover, but cannot understand why the 10GB added cannot be utilised as it has been specifically paid for?

Wireless Terms

5.    If you use all your plan data, the first 10GB extra data pack will automatically be charged to your account. Once this is used up, extra data packs can be purchased but limits apply as the service is not intended for heavy data users.  If you regularly require more data in excess of over 5 extra data packs (ie more than 2 months in any 4 month period), we may ask you to move to another connection technology or to reduce your data usage on Wireless Broadband. If you continue to require more data in excess of the 5 extra data packs a month, we reserve the right to withdraw your access to the Services by cancelling it on 30 days’ notice.

13.    Any unused data within a monthly data allocation will not be carried forward to the following month.

We also have a home phone running through it so it is not practical to turn off modem as has been suggested by Spark

It's quite an expensive plan (looking at Inspire wireless as well now its been upgraded) an just stings to get a $10 bill for data you can't use.

Your thoughts?

Now I may have missed something here - but have you thought about a change of plan

https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/unplan/

I used to be on the 120GB plan and now and than would go over to around 125GB or maybe just 2GB over and I did think ahh fudge so ive paid for 10GB and i either only just use it or dont use it at all (as the same as you it would be added just the night before my plan roll over)

Where as the unplan has no overage changes when you go over 120GB and the speed stays the same, though in the T's and C's you do have to be careful not to use 300GB in a month or more then 180GB a month for 3 months in a row ...

This I find is fine for me as I tend to sit around 140-150GB if I do have a busy time and its only $85 where as if i have a quiet month the cost drops.

Sorry about all the GB :) and numbers but just an idea.

I had been talking to them back when they were 5mB/1mB, but the upgrade has been rolled out to 25mB/5mB.

Got 4 months to go on a 12mth contract with Spark, will look at options soon as inspire aerial installation needs to be booked in advance.

I just don't understand why Spark won't let you use the whole 10GB you are paying for?

Thanks for the replies

Have you considered switching to Spark's unplan?

That might make the difference - the limits are no more than 300GB a month, or 180GB per month for 3 months, so if you have an ebb and flow, you could probably get away with that as an option.

Sounds to me like the OP is on Rural wireless, this isnt compatible with Unplan - Nor do the usage patterns meet an ideal customer.

The data addons aren't rollover, simply because this isn't that sort of plan.

Automatically getting an addon right before it rolls over, does sound like an unideal situation.

I'll have a chat with the teams that look at these plans, and raise that particular situation.

I highly suspect it's very rare that this actually happens..

I can't really speak to what is to come in the future.

Thanks, Id appreciate it.

Ive been with Spark/Telecom for a long long time - Its something that I think can be easily sorted and likely just an oversight

Cheers

I wanted to move to Unplan from my 120GB wireless connection. But because my area is now a Stop Sell & apparently the Spark accounting system doesn't see the transaction as a switch but rather a stop one & start another, I'm not able to do this.

So it would seem that being in an area that's been obviously very good to Spark means we are all stuck on legacy plans & unable to take advantage of their new, more flexible & cost-effective plans.

There's not much that pisses me off more than unecessarily paying more than I need to.

I would imagine its going to become more common with Spark Sports and their dreams of killing sky.
