After some recent experiences, my advice now whenever someone asks what router to use for FibreMax (or gig) is "A Huawei 659b, or the one your RSP has supplied"

The 659b recommendation is because I have done extensive testing myself on it and know what it can do - as have others I trust.

The fallback of "the one your RSP supplied" is based on them being reasonably competent and supplying something that works.

In _ANY_ other case, regardless of cost or spec, my answer is "Try it yourself and if it doesn't perform to expectations, try a Huawei659b"

I _KNOW_ there are some routers out there that do a fine job on Gig fibre, but in the last 2 weeks I have come across 3 that should, but don't.

A note on consumer grade routers: Most are overpriced garbage. I'm yet to find a router in the consumer market (with the exception of the Ubiquiti AmpliFi) that can outperform a "enterprise grade" solution on both price and performance. Don't get sucked in. The word "Gaming" is a buzzword that is often thrown about and means nothing - there is nothing these routers can actually do to improve your gaming ability especially if you're playing over Wireless. This is also mentioned below again as I see too many people getting sucked in. Do your research, if the all in one router costs over $350 then take a step back and consider either the Grandstream or Ubiquiti solutions as these are not much more price wise and will outperform any router in this price. If you're needing basic WiFi along with a router that can do anything then the Huawei HG659 is honestly the best solution here.

If you've got a HG659 then test with that. If you want more advanced then the Edgerouter X works well (there is also one for sale here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=245356). Also try booting your PC into Linux as I've quoted in this thread as some PC's (like my own - which is also a Xeon with 32gb of ECC ram) perform poorly in Windows for some strange reason.

That's good to know. I'm guessing this is with HWNAT enabled also? I've added a disclaimer on my post for the AmpliFi as I've seen it perform Gigabit very nicely in the past so may be a bug.

Correct it is with HWNAT enabled. I just checked and it's set to HWnat and latest FW. Results look good on Speedtest.net (but DL is clearly better even on speedtest with the 659) but real world downloads are faster on the 659 by a factor of 3-4 times.

ANNOYING because I like the clock and I have too many devices for the 659 - so I am currently running with a slow router on gig. I really should just downgrade back to 100 :-)

I have heard EdgeRouter X has some software limitation so it does not support 1Gbps in full-duplex mode, wouldn't that be a limiting factor for BigPipe's gigabit UFB?

If so shall I go with RB750Gr3? In any case I am not going to setup any QoS rules so I can not justify paying more than a 100-150 for a wired only router which means either RB750Gr3 or EdgeRouter X

@zyo Just get the Edgerouter X... It works fine on Gigabit with HWNAT enabled and I've deployed many of these.

mmkay, I will get in touch with that 2nd hand seller. Seems like there are quite a few more EdgeRouter fans than MikroTik.

Most importantly for those using Windows and ethernet - have you update network drivers or installed the OEM drivers? I found out that my gigabit connection was performing at around 250 Mbps. 2degrees sent me a test unit (a headless Linux box) and it consistently got around 900 Mbps. Updated drivers on my test box and speeds went up to 600 Mbps.

Are you referring to ethernet adapter driver?
My motherboard comes with Intel lan and i just updated to the latest official driver. Minimal difference.

I have $800 Draytek "gigabit" routers that won't do over 300meg, where as the basic Netcomm or Huawei routers achieve 940+ The cost of the router and the marketing as gigabit is unfortunately not related to real world performance.
