Not sure if its just me but it appears my Fibre Max is getting slower when i first signed up it was getting expected speeds of 920-950Mbps and upload 480-550Mbps (Yes sometimes)

 

But now i am only getting 748Mbps and 269 Mbps for the last month or two.

 

Any suggestions as i asked via live chat and the guy said that they could investigate but would charge $120 if they found "Nothing" and just kept going on about using the inferior Telecom modem (Old Technicolor fibre modem is the only one we have)

 

Are these speeds expected and what i "pay for" any suggestions or has someone else experienced a similar situation

Restart modem and all switches

So what is your actual issue? From your post and information given there is nothing to indicate anything wrong with your Spark connection.

 

First thing would be to try a different PC as this is probably your issue as to why you've seen speeds slow.

It's quite likely to be the method of testing, although could be a router issue too. I would recommend buying a cheap Spark HG659 off trademe for testing purposes if you don't already have one.

 

 

 

Also follow the instructions here to test outside of Windows and report back with the results.

I'm on spark, here are my results ....pretty much full speed. 

 

 

I wonder, fibre is distributed to each premise via the GPON standard ... which means you share the connection with neighbours.   If your neighbours are heavy users then it could slow down your connection.   But, I don't know if the slowdown is more theoretical than practical.

You would require a couple of users on the same PON as you pulling full wack for you to notice, in real world usage with upto 16users on each PON and assuming only a 3-4 of them are on Gig plans (ie approx 20% of users select greater than 100/20) and taking into account the real nature of TCP traffic (assuming you dont have someone pulling iso's from a well endowered server close by) then you are unlikely to notice.

 

As for the OP, as has been suggested, try a liveCD/USB linux boot and do the tests are report back.

Speedtest.net 

 

Fast.com (Similar but it seems to overestimate sometimes)

 

iperf

 

Neigbours:

 

Well most have Fibre 100.

 

Router issue: Probably not i have a brand new spare here and that made no difference from a warranty claim

You're missing key details

 

What device are you testing from, including OS, hardware specs, connectivity method. Windows is notorious for software updates gimping performance, and having less than stellar drivers.

 

Where are to testing to, Speedtest.net in Africa won't do you any good, nor would speedtest from a web browser, Fast.com like you said likes to pull numbers from the ether, and iperf again is subject to where, also.

 

RE: your neighbours, let's not speculate here, easier to assume all is well until we exhaust everything else.

 

Router - what software revision? Are you running the exact same firmware as 1 year ago?

 

So, a bit more detail and more information can be given to you.

Chorus make available public information on the utilisation of every individual PON port in their network. If anyone cared enough they can look up the 15 minute averages on any PON port.

 

I did care enough but it involved setting up a database to import the phenomenally large amount of data and then writing some code to populate the database.

 

The outcome was that we should just believe Chorus. There's no PON port congestion.

 

There's no need to give conjecture with this data available.

 

As for the Spark service. I can assure you there are no points of congestion. (Although as per my footer on this post, that's an unofficial (but correct) statement)

while nothing hardware wise has changed on your end, what browser updates, windows updates or other software updates have happened?

Spark Wellington was the main test server but did go with other ones Chch and AKL, Tested at multiple times of day Morning During day 10am-2pm ish and late evening (2am).

 

Iperf was used to an overseas destination (wasnt expecting full gigabit) and another spark customer with permission from them

 

Router fw is updated usually every month depending on when ubiquiti releases updates. No hardware upgrades have been made in this time.

 

2 Main clients have been used for testing 

 

Windows 10 LTSC Desktop Ryzen 7 2700x 

 

Windows Sever 2012 R2

Given we provision gbit at 1000/500, it doesnt surprise me that iperf didnt go well, and running overseas is never going to be promised.
