TeaLeaf:well they just said disconnect and sign up as new customer so thats what Im doing.
How important is static IP? $45 charge
Disconnect? That will be interesting. I hope you don't end up with a long downtime.

If you don't know important a static IP address is then I suspect you don't need one
But end of the day, DNS, Game servers, and Video Conferencing win my vote for $45 Static IP. just keep my security. Didnt cost me $45 the last tme I joined though.
Well ok all you LONG term BP loyal customers.
Just disconnect completely your current address, and use the sign up and go through all the BS to get the 3 months and Router. Not hard, just not what BP has previously allowed me to do on 3 occassions.

Why do you need a router every time? The one currently serving you is surely enough...

I think its more on the 3 months free rather than the free router.

I thought he was more interested in the fridge from Trustpower? I'm not quite connecting the dots here...
We have no free connections (for DSL - UFB are presently paid by the taxpayer), no free equipment and no term contracts. We also aren't the cheapest.
All of which saves us a lot of hassles. Clients who churn every 5 minutes to save a couple of bucks and demand free stuff aren't worth anything to us.

Well I am happy, been with BP 7 years and looks like at least another 12 months. Thank you BP. nobody needs voice support. I find the support superb and easier than waiting on a phone.
Handle9:There's going to be a certain percentage of customers who will churn to save $1 a month. Given this is a mass market commodity business with very low margins it's probably better for them if you leave than to re-sign you.
Very low margins? From a company with no phone support and contracted email support from Skinny? As for $1 a month...
For a 950Mbps connection:
Wholesale - $56
stuff - 4 months at $44.98, 8 months at $90
Orcon - 6 months at $50, 6 months at $100
TheRepublic - $85
Slingshot - $100 w/3 months free
Vodafone - $108 w/ $200 credit
Bigpipe - $109
For a "look how many services we cut to offer the lowest price!" company they are currently one of the most expensive on the market (looks like the only company charging more is Spark).

What you have omitted from your comparison is:
1. Quality of service
2. How desperate some companies are to get clients - ie: willing to lose money

Also, Vodafone.

What's the quality of service, is it literally the best in the industry? Every other ISP in NZ except Bigpipe and Spark are "willing to lose money"?

AndyR:
Been with BigPipe on the $79 100/20 plan for a couple of years now, no contract, but thinking of changing due to all the deals out there, especially on Gigabit plans.
I noticed BigPipe have a 3 month free offer but its for new customers, but BigPipe online chat told me I can't take that as I'm an existing customer, and when I said can I cancel and re-join they said no :)
So I'm curious, why don't they offer deals to existing customers, who instead would save money by walking to another ISP rather than keeping them on and offering the same price as new customers?
Same situation, with BP on same plan. No issues with service or support. Service is good, no need of support. Wish they would offer something to retain existing customers.
For us the best saving would be to switch provider every year for a discount. I don't want to do this, as there is often the 30 day switch from existing, and sometimes issues in the switch over.
:)
