The Thomson TG585 is free to all new Telecom Broadband customers, that includes customers transfering from wholesale providers, such as Xnet.

Contact 123 and they should get this sorted for you.

I called Telecom today and spent about half an hour on the phone to the sales/help desk person.  At the start they did say that it was indeed a 24 month contract and that it was such as I was previously on a Telecom connection (I'm guessing a wholesale customer - Xnet).

I then queried it as I said I believed it was suppose to be a 12 month contract, at which point I was put on hold for a bit.  The person came back to say that they had spoken to their manager who had confirmed that it was suppose to be a 24 month contract as I, though I had been credited $60 (I think) as I had come back to Telecom.  Anyhow, I again queried it saying that the Terms and Conditions on the web indicated that it was a 12 month contract so long as I was a new residential Telecom Broadband customer who had not been with Telecom Broadband in the last 30 days.  The website does say 'new' in inverted commas, but doesn't really allude to what those inverted commas mean.

At any rate, I was put on hold again for about 10 minutes, but when they came back I was told I was going to be put onto a 12 month contract instead.  I sort of got the feeling that the 24 month contract is automatic if you are coming from any of the wholesale ISPs and wanted a free modem, and that you could change to a 12 month contract if you argued enough.

All and all, a happy ending, though it does make me wonder as to how many people there are who might not realise they are on a 24 month contract.

I think the plan kicks in on Saturday, so I'll just wait until then.  My current connection is still going, so that's all good :)

Looks like you pushed a little harder than myself, I'm glad they switched you to the 12 month contract. The sales people I spoke with kept on telling me to "read the terms and conditions on the website" which I had done several times. It's crazy to consider you a telecom customer even if you have never used their broadband! Do they get some sort of commission for sticking people on a 24 month contract I wonder?

I wouldn't really say I pushed too hard - much like yourself, I had read the Terms and Conditions and it never really stated that if you previously had broadband via a Telecom Wholesale ISP, then you would need to have a 24 month contract (if you wanted a free modem).  From what I could see, it simply stated that you could get a free modem with a 12 month contract so long as you had not been a Telecom Broadband customer within the last 30 days.

I think for any organisation, it's safer to have people on longer term contracts.  However if it was simply/explicitly stated that you would have a longer contract length should your previous ISP been a wholesaler, then it would have cleared things up a bit.  In all likelyhood, I would not have opted for the free modem, and simply stuck with a shorter contract, and purchased my own modem.

Thankfully though, it's been sorted out!  Now it'll be interesting to see what kind of connection speed I will get!  That and I can open the modem and try it.  I've left it aside, just in case I needed to return it (in return for having a shorter contract).

hi, got the total home package with free thomson wireless router. dont know about the wireless part as havent got anything to test that with but it seems to work pretty good! least its ethernet not USB too

speeds are good im on ADSL not ADSL2+ or whatever and seem to get 400kb/s - 600 kb/s from a good download source no slowdowns yet

but im in thames so maybe being close to auckland makes a diff?

I love my new Thomson TG585 router, and Telecom's service has been excellent.  I originally called them as I couldn't get my broadband to work after moving house, and since the modem I had was old and not supported by Telecom, there was only so much they could help with.  In the end I asked if I could buy a new modem from them, put me on hold for a few minutes and then advised that they'd consider my change of address as a 'new connection' and I'd get the modem for free.  I'd have kissed the guy if it had been in person, it was the only thing that went right for the whole house move!!!
Once the modem arrived, had issues setting it up, but Telecom were excellent on the phone setting it up manually.  They made what is could've been a very annoying process for me (I get quite mad when things don't work!) very easy.  Yay for Telecom!  Oh, and I have ADSL2, its brilliant!
