Zippity: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz is offline and has been for several hours :(

When will Telecom publicly admit that they have f%$#@ up big time?

Aren't they hosted at Iconz?

Their secondary nameserver is NS1.ICONZ.CO.NZ so I'd assume so yes.

PressF1 went down just after lunch on Sunday according to a member in ChatF1.

When will Telecom publicly admit that they have f%$#@ up big time?

Telecom did not cause PressF1 to go down, I think PressF1 went down due to a power supply issue ( I think the same power issue Telecom had).

The PC World website has been down since Friday night.

Telecom's apology in Mondays DomPost is buried on page 7 next to the Dilbert cartoon. Deliberate?

If Pressf1 is like PCWorld and CW then they are hosted by Fairfax itself. AFAIK Telecom is not involved.

I think telecom's appology is also over at theherald.co.nz , but they still wont say exactly what happened and probably never will.

Just curious to know whether knowing the route cause changes anything. Or would you rather be more interested to know that everyone on the responsible organisation is doing everything possible (incl spending $$) to ensure it does not happen again...just curious.

I don't think it's a joke at all. Neal is quite serious on this post.

What's funny about a fault that caused hundreds of thousands to be affected by an outage and have an organisation working to make sure it doesn't happen again?

It's this lack of respect that makes some people high up in the organisation to think twice before authorising employees to post in forums.

I don't think it is a joke either.

While it is nice to know work is being carried out to prevent a re-occurence, that is what we expect would occur.

Remembering this is a geek community, it is the curiosity of what actually happened that is the basis of the request, Joe Public won't care too much but us geeks on the other hand . . . :-)

rabsoft: I heard that Telcom has had a Major problem with power going down at MDR there main exchange

Yeah, I heard that too.

Doesn’t explain why DNS started breaking on Friday afternoon, followed by increasing outages towards the evening.

I too would like to know why it went down. In today’s age of block level replication, and the fact that Telecom has access to a large low latency network I would think that 99.999% uptime (5.15mins down) is achievable by those with Telecom size budgets.

It is not being touchy.

I actually haven't seen many problems on Telecom's offering - except for this last weekend huge outage. I have reports of many people that are happily using the broadband at consistent speeds while other ISPs are shapping, blocking, filtering...

Also according to some consumer surveys Telecom managed come from behind the ranks last year to very close to the top this year - thanks to a lot of internal work. I know because I've attended an internal conference and there is a lot of stuff people out there don't know. And the other marketing departments are better.
