kaiwai: You know, this is a TECHNOLOGY website and I commented about the TECHNOLOGY behind the new MOBILE phone network. Why is it remotely off topic? When you talk about a new network then ALL discussions, from pricing, technology and so forth are ontopic.

I apologise if you expect people to be gushing over the superficial aspects of the network and the parent company - like whether Vodafone is this way or that way etc.

I think the main reason is because this specific discussion seems to be about the branding and the time of the services - not the technology.

kaiwai: Looks great; I had a look at the technology specifications - looks like we'll be on the bleeding edge of technology for such a small nation. The only thing that is depressing is how expensive it is and how most will never be able to afford to use it.

How do you know "how expensive it is"? Based on what are you commenting this? Plan costs? These were not unveiled yet. It would make no sense at all for Telecom charge more for XT Network connections, now that Vodafone is releasing their 900MHz extended coverage.

nate: To me, the font styling and overall look and design made me think it was a TelstraClear initiative.? Not the best comparison, but a quick and dirty example:

The owner of the testdrive.co.nz domain works for Saatchi and Saatchi . . . :-)

sbiddle: As somebody just pointed out I wonder if it's a coincidence they came up with a name that rhymes with "Next G".

Wonder if the network will be as good? Smile

The other comparison was that of the good old IBM XT

I thought it might have something to do with Xtra and Telecom XT, as they are saying you'll get great broadband services on this new network.

But who knows, look forwrd to more teaser ads, hahahaha.

this is such a good news. I have been waiting for this for so long. Now I have no hope in Vodafone. I have waited for 3 years for Voda 3g in rangiora, but nothing has been done until today. I will be the first to sign up a telecom 3g broadband plan when the store open on the launch day. I try every means for my iPhone to lose signal. And after losing the signal, I searched for available signal, I always got telecom nz there, because iPhone couldn't get Voda signal, so what I need is a sim card of tnz.

chiefie: Interestingly, we were having dinner when the ad is on. I saw Richard then there I was didn't pay anymore attention to it, thinking it is just another Top Gear thingy.

So as the ad ended, I didn't even catch the attention to know what ad it is for.

I think this is a fail in commercial marketing, as it isn't something that can take attention of whatever doing and get the viewers curious and wondering.

Are you serious? I Think its a good idea, most people watch topgear. But even if they didnt watch TG, it's still a good ad, Builds up and kept me interested..

Telecoms finally picking up

slightly OT, would it be possible once the new network is open for business, telecom would launch a new look website at the same time?
