I'm off the boil here...just posting my response and there is 20 pages of replies already!

Looking at the data options, there is nothing to interest me, especially if I am to compare Telecom's offering against Vodafone's largest mobile 3G broadband offerings:

Telecom: 3GB = $84.95 (available on Prepay or Account)

or

Vodafone: 3GB = $79.95 (On Account, wiith no term) with double data (another 3GB) for just another $10

Vodafone: 3GB = $69.95 (On Account, with 24 month term), with double data (another 3GB) available for just another $10

Appears there is no contest...Vodafone is not only cheaper, both on plan and without, substanially cheaper on a 24 month term, but also offers substanial more data for only $10 more.

At first glance, looks like I will be staying with Vodafone...but I will look into this more over the coming days...see how Vodafone responds (if at all)

Quick question - with the interconnection rates Vodafone and Telecom pay each other to take calls on each others networks, do they charge each other by the second or by the minute? Eg, if a Telecom custoemr made a call to a Vodafone customer that lasted 1 minute and 24 seconds, would Vodafone charge Telecom the full rate for 2 whole minutes?

Just wondering how this works out at a wholesale level....

I'm not sure if I have missed it, but I can't seem to find it anywhere... Has there been any info released about price for a new XT SIM Connection? May not be a biggie for everyone but it's still another cost to factor in.

We only use mobile phones and quite frankly I'm amazed at these so called better values.
We have 3 prepaid phones all on old 49c a minute plans.
One contract phone on 600 free minutes, 500 telecom, 100 vodafone, with a 3 day weekend which I did not see in the new listing.
The 1gig mobile broadband is the same price.

I believe this XT is about a new system not better plans.

Will wait this one out before we change.

Ok so;
Should all electronic stores that sell Telecom phones be selling the phones tomorrow?
If we want to keep our current telecom number and buy a new phone, will we need to pay for the simcard?
And how long should this take and would we need to wait instore? Thanks :)

Jeez... it would be nice if they maybe waived the fee for launch day or a couple of days after. Or offer a free connection for people switching from cdma to wcdma or from Voda (which they may do, who knows).

First off cheers to the dudes camping out with the giant hand cutout in Newmarket! Wish I could join, you, whoever u are. I honked but :) See you in the morning I'm going to enjoy my bed tonight, and be making the short trip down there to get my Telecom SIM on opening.

To be honest, I can understand all the number crunching about what plans are better/cheaper etc, I don't have my bills handly, but do around $300-$400 a month and am probably on the wrong plan with Vodafone because I don't have the time or the inclination to list all their plans out and do the calculations on my last 3 months of bills to figure out what plan would be best for me on Vodafone's pricing plans.

For me it's not about cost, it's about being able to do exciting things like driving over the harbour bridge while talking to someone, or transfering money on internet banking before getting to the front of the queue, driving in my car and not going off the map onto gridlines because I've driven faster than the 3G network can download.

I'm paying Vodafone a small bucket of money every month and can't use my phone how it was designed to be used, and will probably pay around the same on Telecom's new XT network.

The advantage is that for the first time in a long long time I will be able to UNDERSTAND my bill, a novel and welcome concept in the Telecommunications industry, and be able to buy 3G phone's like the iPhone and be able to use it like Steve Jobs and the rest of the world do.

I note with amusement that in other threads Vodafone have finished their 97% rollout of 3G, but yesterday I was literally standing across the road (like 10 metres away) of the Vodafone building in Auckland with full 3G coverage and getting CALL FAILURES, and people in Christchurch living 10 minutes from the CBD cannot get 3G signal. I'm pretty sure it's still the 3rd largest city in NZ?

It seems like Vodafone have now backed the wrong technological horses and the roles are reversed?

I will see what 2d brings out whenever they release pricing, or open retail outlets or even launch a network but Telecom have earnt my loyalty simply from not locking my in a 12 month contract for daring to wish to purchase services from them.

In essence, I like my telco's to have kahunas, and candy, and preferably in that order. :-)

I'm happy with the plans, for me who sends 300ish texts per month to all networks, and uses data in small amounts (mostly use my phone on WLAN for data), and calls once every now and then, I can save a lot of money by going back to Telecom.

Can someone please clarify the txt thing on prepay please? Am I correct you have the $12 or whatever dropped off your balance at the start of the month, and that entitles you to that? (as Vodafone do with their add on packs) Or is it like $10 text is at the moment, where you'll keep paying $0.20 per text until you hit the $10 cap?

Loving the $1/day for data too.

Voice plans seem ok & on the maths might work out better than Vodafone.

But data is the future earner for me, Data for the USB cards is poor compared to Vodafone, they will need to match or better to be competitive.....

I think I will be holding off buying in too much XT gear until I see a big change in rates. Vodafone has the best rates, the speed is still in question but they offer good value for money and coverage that will be close to XT now on their 900mhz network.

XT will be a better network potentially but for now that wont mean jack especially if they offer far less value for money.

5 out of 10 Telecom... hurry up and improve so people like me can make a buck or two!

Postpaid plans can be taken open term or . . .

Is a point that hasn't been discussed here yet, Vodafone's plans all require 12 months plus term do they not?

The open term bit is great and the way it should be, it also puts the advertising of say B+W and 2degrees about not signing a term contract to bed.

Of course a lot of people will have to buy a new phone which may not deliver to it's full potential with other operators (as it won't have 900MHz UMTS) . . .

not impressive at all. Flexi was a great plan and these are a leap backwards to the dark days of "allocated minutes" at fixed prices.

Also it appears the text plans will have to be purchased ahead of time it seems instead of it just being there if you choose to use it.

And we now salute farewell to the long chats of old on the mobile during those off peak hours.

You get $10 credit with it and another $10 registering online, not sure of the T+C behind it, assume for new customers only? If you want to keep your number it's probably different... Only caught my eye, I didn't look into it in detail.
