warrenjones: nice ads but i would still prefer them to use their money to have coverage for all of nz and get rid of blackspots.

But no ads = no customers = no money to do so Wink

hey saw the telecom XT ad on tv the other day where they were trying to advertise for their coverage in different countries by sending the lady to remote places and i think it was in a market in China/Hong Kong where the lady says something along the lines of

"it works here but how about somewhere more sophisticated" !!!

i am not from China/Asia but doesnt that sound a bit degrading for asian markets ??

He was being funny I think.  If you notice the next place is a london pub –hardly the height of sophistication I think everyone will agree.

I think it becomes a lot more degrading when it is taken out of context.  The fashion industry are not exactly known for their desire to embrace all people and cultures (a stereotype the ad plays on).
Personally I identify more with the 'real' people in the market, the pub, and the ute and feel it is more likely to be offensive to fashion designers.

I AM actually from Hong Kong, I saw that stupid ad and I am deeply offended! Just for that I am never going to use the telecom XT network. Plus the XT network is just the same as the vodafone network that has been around for years, dont know what the big deal is with all those ads....

I know its not the same ad we are discussing here but if you remember the last ad they have with someone travelling around the world to test ther network. The old lady in the ad (no idea who she is and dont care) who said something about Hong Kong being not very sophisticated. Well, I AM from Hong Kong, I saw that stupid ad and I am deeply offended! Just for that I am never going to use the telecom XT network. Why would you want to degrade the entire chinese market when you are trying to sell something to the entire public? Plus the XT network is just the same as the vodafone network that has been around for years, dont know what the big deal is with all those ads....

Now on to the speedboat ad, i wonder who approved the idea... it doesnt make sense at all... comparing two things that has nothing alike... all i see is a boat speeding on the water and someone sending a pxt... then all in a sudden, the phone wins! woohoo! I hope one of these XT ads will go on winning the worst ad of 2009.

The reason why they may seem successfull is because they keep shoving their ad into our face. They never proved to me how good they claimed to be. It can be used all around the world, i think vodafone can too. i can send pxt faster than a sppedboat....i cant see how vodafone loses (do people still use pxt nowadays???) and another one showing the XT network is working in the ocean on a metal bunker thing RIGHT NEXT TO THE HARBOUR BRIDGE! hahaha for god sake that means its very near Auckland city and of course it works! I would be more impressed if they are testing the phone INSIDE the bunker (e.g. like in the lift) which the vodafone next can, too, work prefectly. (most of thest speed and coverage test really depended on the model of the phone anyway!)

Just in the time I was typing the above message, the same speedboat ad has been on a single channel three times already. How can the public not KNOW about it? If you put enough money into an ad I am sure everyone will know the existance of whatever it is you are selling. But has it "successfully" convinced the general public into buying the product? That, I dont know. I only know that it didnt convince me or anyone i know yet.

I don't think it was offensive at all. It was just playing on what people think of "sophisticated". Most people would expect mobile roaming to work in Paris, but many wouldn't know it works in some remote Asian marketplace. Paris would be the "sophisticated" place on Earth, seeing they are at the center of the fashion industry, and an Asian marketplace would be the remote point. It could have been anywhere else really, and nothing would beat the sophistication implied by the fashion industry.

Hmm think people are getting a bit bent out of shape over nothing here.

A market regardless of what country it is in is not a sophisticated place. Has nothing to do with it being in Hong Kong or London or where ever. It has everything to do with it being a market and not some high street fashion shop or other "sophisticated" place.

llaw019: They never proved to me how good they claimed to be. It can be used all around the world, i think Vodafone can too.

That is exactly the point. Prior to now if you roamed to other countries then there was only one company that you could reliably roam with, Vodafone. I have used them for years for that exact reason. The point they are putting across is that finally Telecom can compete with that.

As for coverage I think if you spend a little bit of time looking into it then I think you will find that the XT is not like the network that Vodafone have. It is a 3G only network not a 3G if you are in down town and 2G almost everywhere else.
Also personally for me it does have better coverage then Vodafone’s network.

An Hong Kong marketplace being a remote point eh...? In the context of the world it is New Zealand that is remote. Has anyone got any idea where that "remote" market place is? has anyone know how many people there using mobile phones?

That's an advert. Adverts tell a story. A fairy tale. It's not real. Why do you take it personally?

What i really dont like about it is that they choose a marketplace in Hong Kong which I am sure every city in every country have something similar and labelled it as not sophisticated giving the general public an overall picture of Hong Kong as a "non-sophisticated" marketplace. That is just so typical. Oh, an asian city? must be all dirty and crowded and not sophisticated.

Hope you can see how i feel by imginaing what you would think if you see New Zealand being misrepresented to the gerenal public by some overseas company which has no idea what a great country New Zealand actually is (Or that they actually know but choose to misrepresent it anyway).
