Have you read the following?

So I'm a little confused about this cabinet/exchange thing.

Specifically, I'm looking at telecom's map thing, and I can't figure out the distance from my house to the exchange.

Could someone have a go at working it out, I'm on Liston Crescent in Hamilton.
The maps thing shows I'm in a zone with an exchange, but not a cabinet.

It doesn't show exactly where the exchanges or cabinets are located just the areas they cover.

Two things you need to consider are:

1:  Longer line lenth = higher attenutation (signal loss) = Lower adsl sync speed (line rate)
2:  Bad quality lines or interal house wiring = higher attenuation (signal loss) = Lower adsl sync speed) (line rate)

A quick google for the Hamilton East exchange location turned up this location
http://zoomin.co.nz/map/nz/hamilton/hamilton/galloway+street/127/

You are within 2km of the exchange "as the crow flys" but obviously the phone lines follow roads and other odd paths.  I would say 4Mb is a bit low (and your attenutation is a bit high) for your distance from the exchange.

I would look at your house wiring, how many jacks points... monitored alarm?  Maybe get a ADSL master filter/spliter installed.

I agree.  But what the good thing is though...No serious BigTime complaints for anyone in a while now.  This is good news.

My only minor complaint is that videos from Yahoo.co.nz still don't stream and TVNZ is a looser for me aswell.
These are gripes I can live with.  The rest is going amazingly well.  I think Telecom are on top of things now :)

Dravid I understand you are getting uncapped international http is that correct? I don't believe others are so fortunate. I stand behind my previous complaints, Telecom is still failing to fufill it's obligation to provide the service laid out in the terms and conditions whilst the artificial cap on international http is in place. Telecom's failure to inform it's customers about these issues remains a disgrace.

I was getting uncapped international for a while. I still do every now and again. Or at least slighty more than everyone else is reporting. But I really don't download that much. Its the VoIP and gaming I really care about.

So far I have not had a problem with either since they moved the traffic around to make latency sensitive applications faster. I guess I cant speak for others but so far I am happy with the changes they have made.

My 2 cents.. I havnt had any issues since aprox 12th of April, when CTS informed me the issue should be resolved. My biggest gripe is that during the month prior to that there was no status updates, no emails to customers, etc. In fact almost everyone at Telecom insisted it was business as usual despite obvious issues. Trying to get a credit for the duration the issues lasted was also a bit like trying to get blood from a stone as well. Only when I initiated thel formal complaint process and said "Credit & Apology or I goto TDRS then disputes tribunal" Did I get a nice insincere apology and a credit.

But I have decent net again, and a credit.. so if not exactly happy about it I'm at least content to let it lie.

Doozy: You may want to take notes.. If issues like this happen again (god forbid), make sure someone puts it on the network status page and keeps it there until its fixed. Also fixing it in less than a month would be good :-P

The only thing that's outright not working for me (that I know of) is livestream, which just buffers forever. Pretty sure it's shaped to a few kb/s.

I just downloaded steam to take advantage of the "Free Portal" thing they have going. While I had issues updating and logging in, steam is downloading Portal at a nice 399KB/s.

Anyone else still having issues with Steam?

Yeah Steam client opening and content downloads are all good on Big Time lately.

Portal download is going great.

No new major complaints about the service at the moment ;)

I still have issues logging into Steam, but nowhere near as bad as before (it'll fail one or twice and log me in within 5 minutes, whereas before it'd take over 40 minutes on average)

Yea, I'm maxing my line in steam right now. What server do you use? I'm currently using the server in New Zealand but was told that wasn't the best one to use.

Is there a server that performs better than our local one on BigTime?

I haven't even looked at that setting since I installed steam, have all my games fully downloaded, and leave steam running almost 24/7 anyway...
