Just quickly to those who have been in this thread for the last 22 pages... if I look through will I find something on skype video vs. bigtime? (and the breaking up of audio on the downstream - i.e. they can hear me just fine but they're breaking up my end) Next step will be the search feature ;)

Also, Just testing Microsoft Zune download services tonight in the form of a 10.91GB movie and its not particularly quick.

Thanks.
Jared

Talkiet:
DravidDavid: I just switched a few days ago.

[snip]

There is also a plan available that Telecom does not advertise. My friend called one night to complain and they just said they would put him on an unlimited plan without traffic shaping. When I asked about it they claimed it did not exist.
[snip]

Your friend was imagining things. No such plan exists. The person you spoke to at Telecom was telling the truth when they said it doesn't exist.

Hope that's 100% clear enough to nip this rumour in the bud.

In fact, let's be totally fair about this... Have your friend PM his phone number to me (if he's still with Telecom Retail) and I'll find out through the correct channels what plan he is on and report back to him (only). He can then confirm this is an unfounded rumour.

Regards.
Neil G

I take it you work for Telecom.

And it ain't a rumor, it is what he told me, true or not.  Thought I might share it just incase.  Looks like you know better though.

Well on advice of people who responded to my comments about how poor Big time is and I should change plans I have, now on Advantage, so what is different
P2P 9 am to 7 pm, I now get an average of 123Kb rather then 2 KB.
Streaming from BBC and You tube no differnce still useless, so I can confirm that all users access the same You tube cache.
Basic browsing just the same, so if the URL cache is working all users go through it.

My modem sync speed is the same, the speedtest result before and after are the same.
So now I can load a 700Meg P2P in about six hours and when I talk to friends on Vodafone and Orcon they laugh and laugh and say that takes us about 10 minutes it makes me feel like I am the kid who still has the ten year old PC running windows 95.

Hello,

I'm another world of warcraft player and was switched onto the big time plan when it was introduced and they removed the plan I was on previously. It did seem fine for the most part untill the last couple of months. Any time I would login to world of warcraft (after about 20 disconnections) my ping would be fine if i wasn't doing anything (300-400) but as soon as anything remotely intensive started happening (3 people moving on screen at once) the ping would jump to 3-6k. 6k is unplayable but even if it is magically at 400 the whole game would stop every 20 seconds for about 5 seconds. The only thing I could describe it would be as a whole heap of packet loss.

Without wow tunnels I can not even get into the game. Disconnects before your passed the loading screen. After far too much frustration I decided to try and fix what the problem was. After replacing my dodgy old modem with a brand new one, thinking that there could be some kind of memory leaks or something strange with it. I found nothing had changed, I would still be on 6k ping and nothing would be playable. So I thought well if it's not the modem then maybe its possibly telecom related.

So I went searching and found you guys! Wow oh wow a majority of these posts describe my issues to the very dot(It was like I had already had one post before today Cool)!. Due to all your information I thought to myself screw it! I changed my plan and omg connection first try without wow tunnels! You do not no how amazing this is to me! My ping has not gone above 300 and  have not disconnected once!

So at this stage I'm not sure if the Big time plan is working how telecom was expecting. There are a lot of techs here stating that you don't get everything you want (speed or huge downloads). Which makes total sense and I agree 100%. But is the Big time plan mean't to completely remove all ability to play mmorpg's?

P.S Telecom Technicians at this site. I think it's great you guys spend some time here helping people out. Most of us customers cringe at the thought of calling the help desk only to  be put through yet another power cycle to get no where. But as of the message stating wow is fixed for Big time plan. I can assure you based on my experience, It is not fixed, or it is fixed and world of warcraft isn't a supported game for this plan.

Thanks guys. Sorry for long read!

Howdy guys,

I moved to Big Time a few days ago and since iv had a lot of trouble with Skype and Aion. Now i know about the managing, in my opinion Telecom promised management to maximise experience not choking it. This to me means its unplayable for high bandwidth games like FPS but fine for MMO's.

Aion is laggy as hell, not constant lag, just major spikes. Sometimes up to and including 300,000 MS Ping (View Screenshot At Bottom)

Skype however is weird, i can send video and audio and the recipient is crystal clear. However my recieving audio can be scratchy, and the video has 0-5 fps. Now skypes technical gizmo tells me that im getting a 10% packet loss on the call, and awful video download.

How is this possible when i have such perfect outgoing video?!

Anyway, can someone mayby contact me or reply here about searching for the problem with Telecom? The helpdesk isnt very useful, as they are not in this country but some outsourced place. Specifically adding aion to the special program list like WoW and why skype is buggy?

Note - All worked perfectly on Vodafone before the swap.

Thanks

Chris

Just test Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty (number one) during peak hours.

I was playing from 10AM till 3PM on Battlefield 2 with a ping of 12-15ms. I had no lag issues or anything like that even during intense action. (if that makes a difference)

I played Call of Duty 1 from about 4PM till about 7PM. I got the most impressive ping to an australian server I have ever gotten. Two servers I played on pinged anywhere from 18ms to 33ms. No loss, no lag, no probs.

What I don't understand is that Ventrilo is almost unusable! Why would something like that be so shaped? I guess it has something to do with the server being in the states, but it is a little annoying when you get disconnected every 5 minutes and have to guess what people say over all the lag.

The fact I can download stuff from places like Adobe at full line speed is a massive bonus.

Hi guys,

After very much loving of the Pro plan I was on for wow(Didn't have one disconnection and didn't need wowtunnels at all!) I had to switch back due to mb usage. Dam people in this house hold! As soon as I said no downloads because we are not on a unlimited plan, they download 4 times as much!

Anyway, after switching back, I disconnected every pc on the network and connected directly to the modem, removing all routers etc and  I can safely say to you that my problems with wow and the Big time plan are still there. I have tried to connect 7 times tonight and disconnected before I can even check my mail. I would tell you what my ping was but I'm not on long enough for it to register a response.

Maybe this is a sign to start playing more tennis and get rid of my internet :)

according to a friend of mine, the shaping servers have a list of games that is getting bigger. Apparently Modern Warfare 2 isn't even able to connect to anything.

WoW might be in the same category.

Disclaimer: I do NOT work for telecom.
The shaping servers do have a list of games, but my understanding is that it's to allow gaming to function well, rathern than throttle it to death. I was having some issues with a game and tdgeek and dozzy were very helpful in troubleshooting it, and workign towards getting my server IP's added to said list.

Honestly I'd say your friends full of shit.

We will be switching back to the 20GB plan, can't afford the insane pricing for overage that Telecom has for the 40GB plan... Will miss the big time plan as I've been able to download things that I've been wanting for sometime now which would have been impossible on 20gb a month.

We would stay on the plan if WoW was playable but it's not. (Dont mention wow tunnels etc etc, it doesnt help)....

I just watched an ad where Vectra was advertising fibre to the home and it was liking the NZ internet to mains water.

They had straws instead of pipes taking water into the houses, it summed up the state of the NZ internet very well. Ah well maybe one day...

Just thinking,

Could it be possible that the shaping doesn't allow for people still on adsl 1? So for example during peak times downloads get shaped back 500k. This would possibly still get adequate results for someone on a 24mb line. But for someone with a 1.5mb line this could be quite different?

Not that I know how the formula for telecoms shaping work. Just throwing out ideas because I have nothing else to do with my gaming time now. :p

If you're now on an unmetered plan, you should log a call with the Telecom helpdesk.

They could help you resolve this issue, whereas most of the people on this board can't.

In order to eliminate as many factors as possible, please try the following speedtest and let me know what you get

http://www.telecom.co.nz/bbspeed/telecom500.htm

If you re-run the test, make sure to hit ctrl-f5 to force a full reload

Cheers - Neil G

For the BigTime haters. I started 2 torrents at aprox 11pm last night. Total size 16gb. Both completed before I woke up this morning.

Yeah it can be slow at peak time and poorly seeded torrents take forever due to throttling but well seeded torretns still fly down.

Guys

Just remember, Big Time is not throttled to a poor, low speed in peak. It is actually quite generous. If you have slow downloads, why is that? Are there few peers, issues at the other end, high demand from the other end?? What else have you got running? Some users who leech high every month, come to us if one file is at 5KB/sec. Just remember that we don't shape traffic per user or per file, it is global, the same for everybody. And we don't get hammered by thousands of users with these issues, the complete opposite in fact. If you have a low speed file, are all other files better? If everything is poor speed, you need to log a case as Talkiet keeps saying, as you have an issue, and it isn;t a Big Time issue. You will see in this forum many users who chime in saying what good speeds they get in peak, the reason is that our shaped speeds are not too bad at all.

Cheers to all

Tony
