Just remember, Big Time is not throttled to a poor, low speed in peak. It is actually quite generous. If you have slow downloads, why is that? Are there few peers, issues at the other end, high demand from the other end?? What else have you got running? Some users who leech high every month, come to us if one file is at 5KB/sec. Just remember that we don't shape traffic per user or per file, it is global, the same for everybody. And we don't get hammered by thousands of users with these issues, the complete opposite in fact. If you have a low speed file, are all other files better? If everything is poor speed, you need to log a case as Talkiet keeps saying, as you have an issue, and it isn;t a Big Time issue. You will see in this forum many users who chime in saying what good speeds they get in peak, the reason is that our shaped speeds are not too bad at all.

Cheers to all

Tony

I think it differers from customer to customer.  I found 2 students in my class that were with BigTime.  One lives in Auckland, I live in Wellsford and one in Snells Beach.

We tested the most popular torrent for Ubuntu we could find.  We used Azu and uTorrent as the P2P clients andtested between 3PM, 6PM, 9PM and 12PM

Over-all the student in Snells Beach got the best download. He managed 200KB/s+ on each test.  I (from Wellsford) maxed the same Ubuntu torrent out at 12KB/s and the Aucklander managed between 400KB/s to 600KB/s.

We compaired it to the Battlefield Bad Company Demo from AUSGamers and a New Zealand server.  Everyone (including me) never dropped below 700K for both servers.

Ventrillo works for the Aucklander, but not for me.
Shoutcasts work perfect for the Snells Beach customer all the time.  I can listen sometimes and the aucklander pretty much has no hope with them.

I hate the fact TVNZ is shaped to death.  Is Telecom still working on that?

Is not being able to stream anything normal? (apart from Youtube)

Any downloads from filesharing sites trickles in at 5 - 15 Kb/s - paid for accounts get up to around 40 - 50 Kb/s. A lot of other downloads from websites (not filesharing) also seem to get confused in this shaping.

People, is this normal for BigTime?

TVNZ uses citylink which telecom doesnt peer with, so all TVNZ content for telecom customers comes via the USA i believe.

Is there a way I can use a VPN or HTTP tunnel to tunnel the traffic un-shaped?  My mother watches coro on there every now and again and it is almost impossible to use.

EDIT: Just had Telecom on the phone and asked about it.  They said TVNZ should not be shaped on BigTime and that they would look into it...I'm not holding my breath though.

Hi everyone,

I made a little you tube video of my last nights wow effort. Took me 20 minutes game time and several disconnections to actually repair my little fella's gear and be able to see my mail. I would have hate to see what it was like doing a 5 or 10 man!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P53zitb4TQM
(Not a very impressive video but it does show you what 5-7 odd minutes of game time is like for me on big time. If I recorded a 3 hour video, it would be 3 hours worth of this movie.)

Also did a quick speed test and I noticed a ping test that I had not yet tried before. Gave that a go, not sure how accurate this test is. But let me just tell you that if that resembles anything like my connection on big time I can see my problems. Ran it 3 times this was the best I got

Ohhh l43a2, do I have some news for you, its slightly OT but relates to this, Telecom DOES peer at a couple of national locations for TVNZ content now, there's still a little work to do before its all 'working as intended', but its there ;)

So everything will be working fine soon?  Any time period in which TVNZ would be working like it should?  This is good news!

Yeah so just been trying to do a bit of FPS gaming on xbox live. BF1943 was lagging quite a lot. I am quite disappointed at this. Especially seeing as Bad Company 2 is out this Friday. I know you guys will just say "oh well you can't have a lot of data and speed" but come on, I thought online gaming does not consume that much data?

I give this 2 or 3 weeks, and unfortunately will be jumping ship and moving to Orcon 100GB if things don't improve (still not sure why Telecom don't offer 80, 100, or more data caps - if people are willing to pay, whats the problem?) This is marginal broadband. Just my personal experience so far.

I certainly hope so and I'm not 100% on the details of the issues they have encountered nor which side of the fence they are on so I couldn't say with certainty how long it will take to resolve, but in saying that ... at this stage I'm just happy something is happening :)

as quoted from telecoms own website

When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds, in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing traffic and online gaming.

Hate to cut it to you but the battlefield series on Xbox 360 is run by EA who do not want to put servers anywhere near here, there arn't any in Australia either so the lag you are experiencing could quite well be because of the distance to the server and not Telecom. Not sure if Battlefield Bad Company 2 is gonna have any servers close to here.

Well, being on the Business advanced plan with Telecom for 18 months, we never had lag with BF1943, Bad Company 1, and many other shooters. I thought interleaving off would help, but doesn't seem to that much.
