john12: Talkiet : you got to be very simple to actually believe what they say :).

personally i believe that their DNS server is managed for us at least. like anything else.....

You're not understanding me.

I _know_ how it is setup. I am not relying on hearsay.

john12: The rule of thumb tells me that Google is much bigger than any ISP in NZ and has more resources.

so its obvious for me that their DNS server is in much better quality than our DNS server in here.

and yes our ISPs in here dont care about their customers.

since when Xtra cared about us that this will be their second time?

yes, they all care about money. not quality for their customers.

John, your really out of line here.

You need to get your facts straight before you post.

Your facts are wrong on so many levels.

Im speaking as a student in computer networking. Directly in this field. Where is your qualification or proof to back you up?

It just so happens, last night, a Telecom rep bumped my issue up the que and had it sorted for me before I woke up the next morning.

Three people have told you that you are wrong. Two work for Telecom and others that work in this exact field. Does that not tell you something?

Did you ever stop and think.

What makes people post about a particular company?

A massive company at that.

They post when they have a problem/a gripe. Quite often from my experience it is their issue too/a issue undirectly related to telecom.

Telecom has done a great job with their plan. Though it still needs some work (Bad Company 2 <3) it is some thing no one else offers.

At the end of the day, you choose to be with whatever provider you like.

If you dont like it, leave.

if Xtra was so good then this thread wouldnt have existed.

Why ihug doesnt have any trouble thread or any other company?

why Xtra has this long trouble thread?

it tells something.

Talkiet might be a Telecom employee, but his replies are sensible  and backed up by both empirical research and common sense if you have even the vageust understanding of network latency.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, Talkiet any idea what could be causing the current issues? They seem intermittent, and have only appeared in the last few days. When the problem presents it appears as a 200-300ms jump in latency, some packet loss and basically unusable speeds on any international traffic.

In the space of this evening my connection has gone from bad to good and back again several times, as evidenced by these pingtests. I've done other traceroutes and pings as well and the results appear to be anywhere international. Telecom WAN is fine at all times.

Well, the main reason is that no other company is attempting to provide a flat rate plan when it's actually VERY challenging to make it an economic proposition.

Users can have all sorts of unrealistic expectations and they vent.

Oh, and exchanges like this where someone refuses to listen to the clear answers and keeps posting misinformation don't help with the length of the thread either :-)

Downloaded the program yet and tested the DNS server speed?

Hi there... I don't have anything I can tell you at the moment (i'm not an official Telecom rep here) but I will make sure that the most appropriate person sees these reports tomorrow morning, if they haven't already.

talkjet: i will use that program later as im busy working on something else.

and most companies dont have this sort of plan just simply because it doesnt work.

its too problematic. why they bother?

99.99% of users have had speed issues from the day 1 till now.

I am just being realistic in here.

i dont know why you dislike my posts.

I think the reason I dislike your posts is that you are portraying your personal feelings as fact. What's worse is that often they are demonstrably wrong.

For example here you say that 99.99% of users have had speed issues since day 1. That's simply not true. Bigtime works for a whole heap of people just fine, but for those users that always want fast speeds and DON'T need uncapped usage, it's not the best plan.

Previous examples included suggesting that the DNS servers are managed for Bigtime users, suggesting that overseas DNS servers are faster than local DNS servers, and you even accused me of being the one spreading misinformation when I clearly have not been.

You're clearly very passionate about the issue, but please put some of that energy into researching and learning about the issues and related technologies instead of just jumping in with wrong info.

Cheers - N

System:
DravidDavid: It will be a readout of some sort of traffic monitor or as pasho suggested, firewall. I'm not so worried about it when I'm not playing though. If it is crap when I am, I will complain. If I have a 800ms ping when downloading something, I couldn't care less....lol.

The reason why i was interested was if a few of us did it then we could see if the ping spikes have a trend and whether it is a problem that varies per user or a much bigger problem

Yea it would be cool if we could look at these stats from lots of locations.

My graph is made of pings to g0-1-0.tkcr3.global-gateway.net.nz. I dont really know what it is other than some router that was in my traceroute to trademe.

And yea i do notice my ping increase when downloading lots/fast, and with torrents going, But nothing like a 10x increase before.

Oh im using mrtg http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/

So far,

Zero issues from the time interleaving was switched off early morning. I am currently downloading something and playing a game in the states. My ping is holding at 150ms with a loss of 1% even when my connection is under load.

If you are in the 10Mb/s zone between you and your exchange or have a strong connection with good lines, I personally (even though some don't recommend it) recommend switching off interleaving.

Against everyones warning. It increased my sync speed rather than decrease it and improved latency to every server I frequently connect too.

VoIP applications such as Ventrilo and Teamspeak work flawlesly along with all the games that I enjoy playing. I seem to have an improved download speed (whether it be a direct result of switching interleaving off or not) to servers over-seas, P2P and local servers.

Packet loss is almost a non-issue now. I get some to the USA but this is to be expected.

Telecom wasn't the easiest to communicate issues with, but what is important is that the issue got resolved. My confidence in their services will be quickly restored if things continue like this.

This plan is a bargin not to be missed seeing the performance I have seen today!
