Looks like the magics dissapeared , I was hitting about 2mbps off apples servers, and 1.5mbps on megaupload, and about 1mbps on torrents (55gig later haha) This seems to happen a couple of times a month

DravidDavid : yes, i dont get a constant 2mb/sec. it goes down to 1.700mb/sec or near that.

but its still very good to dl at such speed as a free user on rapidshare and MU.

also when i can dl that fast, my surfing becomes very fast as well.

as well as other things such as watching an online overseas TV.

normally with the managed speed you cant watch anything.

i hope this stays the same for us :).

pasho:
DravidDavid: Once or twice I think I peaked at 2.1MB/s with FDM. But it slowly dropped down. One time was downloading a file from an Actrix server in Wellington and the other was from a MU server.

Modem says:

Rate (Kbps): 8128 / 832

huh? 8128 and 2MB/s ^_^

there is something not right here dont you think so?

Well, ever since I have had the internet I've always had spikes like that.  I was on 56K about 5 months back for a few weeks.  When I started an over-night download it always started at like 22KB/s and dropped down slowly to the usual 5-6KB/s.

I figure what goes around comes around. I need a 172MB file today. Maybe if I am not greedy today I can get that 500MB file I need so urgently just as fast next week.

If everyone was greedy I would be in patznz's boat. Sharing is caring! :)

Hear lies the stupidity the others have all worked it out that flat rate is undeliverable and won't even try, and it is not as if Xtra hasn't tried before.

Firstly the last two weeks have been much worse than normal on Big Time, there seems to be some fault at play imo.

However, many ISP's in many countries around the world have worked out how to deliver unlimited plans, even ones that primarily speak English and aren't part of major continents eg: Singapore for example.

Really I suspect Telecom needs to have a tougher mechanism in place to handle the people who have found workarounds and are consuming more than their fair share of the Big Time international bandwidth pool 24x7.

We can all appreciate it's a shared bandwidth pool provisioned at a certain contention ratio, think motorway in peak time.. but surely something should be done about that guy with the monster truck taking up 4 lanes?

Same mistake/result as last time (Go Large) again pretty much.

I should clarify its not possible for someone (or many) to use up bandwidth that would otherwise be used by someone else in the way which you mention

There has (past tense) been a degradation fault which would have impacted international transit on the evenings of the 15th and 16th, from last nights reporting and observation of the fault, it appears to have cleared.

I agree though, that there should be better controls on those who appear to have found a workaround, this is something that is currently being worked on.

It would be my personal preference that the management is done further 'down' the network rather than where it is now.

A note on the interleaving on my side, my ping has dropped from 76ms to telecom to 24ms and along with that like DravidDavid my sync speed has also increased by about 50-100kbp/s each way. The only thing is my modem still notes that im interleaved which is odd. Internet usage has also been alot better, things are working as i would expect them to now and is not painfully slow

I've been having fantastic speeds with Telecom Big Time up until 2 nights ago. I can still download Apple trailers in 1080p faster than I can watch them, get 5mbps speedtest results to San Francisco etc

But my access to my newsgroup provider has died, gone from 2MBps to <1KBps. In the past there has been some throttling between 9am and 2am which is fine, but for the past few days in been constant. Telecom say they haven't changed anything and they aren't throttling it.

Any other NNTP users experiencing anything? I just started liking Telecom again (even moved my mobile there) and don't want to go back to disliking them so soon.

I think no matter what, interleaving will always be on, but not as strict.  I remember being told there are many levels in which it works.  My router said Interleaved 64/64.  Now it says Fast Path 1/1

What does yours say?

Call the and tell em' to double check.  That is what happened to me.  I didn't notice an improvement though.  I live an hour out of Auckland on ADSL1 and I can ping Telecom.co.nz between 9ms and 11ms.  I can get 27 to Australia.

Are you within 1 or 2K of the exchange?
