Gladly.

You just sparked an idea.  I'm not suggesting one of the community members do this but say if trusted friends traded log-in details for their ADSL connection, would they adopt each-others problems and perks on the plan?

For example:

- Friend can stream TVNZ and I can't
- I can play Call of Duty and friend can't

If we traded log-in details, would this be reversed?  Might be worth trying if you know someone that you trust.

Ragic, if you can possibly direct me to whatever server you are using for me to test, that would be great.  If it is private, don't worry about it.

The problems continue!

On Telecom it doesn't really matter what you have in the username/password in the modem's admin ui, the authentication is done per port at the exchange/cabinet.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Thought since people are reporting stuff like if they don't hammer their connection, they get better all round' speed, maybe switching out authentication username and passwords, things might change a little.

Stupid idea anyway. :)

My parents are having huge issues with their Big Time plan. Nothing seems to download at over 8KBs. And that's the peak speed, most of the time all they could get was 1KBs.

I had dad ring up Telecom and the clown on the other end told him that there was no problem with the service and the reason everything was going slow was that the sources he was downloading from were going slow. The sources were, HP, Skype, Dropbox, and a few others.

Forget running web installers for anything, they keep losing their connections. The only way to install Skype was to download the 16mb installer overnight.

I went to their house last week and run speedtest.net and a few others all of which reported around 2mbs down. I'd almost go as far as saying that's about what I would expect for an unlimited plan. But it never goes that speed anywhere but the test sites.

In saying that my brother can sit there and play over Xbox live with me with the headsets going and it works fine. And he can play WoW and Steam games fine. Browsing websites seems to go OK and Youtube is average at best but its not unusable but downloading files is a no go.

I suggested to dad that he switch to the adventure plan which is the same price but 20GB. Do you think they would notice a difference?

The first question is "Do your parents need an 'unlimited' plan?" How much do they use every month? If they use 10GB a month, then a non-managed 20GB plan should be plenty surely?

Also, we do not call people names here. There isn't a "clown" working for Telecom. There's a person on the other side.

Yeah the 20GB plan should be more than enough for them but will it actually go any better than the Bigtime plan?

That guy on the phone may not actually be a clown but he was definitely clowning around when he said that the slow download speeds are because HP's, Skype's and Dropbox's servers are all slow. It bothers me that we would say that because non technical people like my dad lap it up and are left thinking that this shoddy service isn't Telecom's problem.

Well it should go better and if it doesn't then Telecom will or at least should make a bigger effort to get it going properly than someone that is on a managed plan, be it what seems to be a poorly managed plan :).

Of course an unmanaged plan will go faster than a managed plan.

Big Time sounds great on paper, but i'd never sign up for it.

A Telecom guy came to my door not long ago, he tried to sell us Big Time and said it was "great for gaming". Telecom should be held responsible for the lies their door to door salesmen tell customers, these guys are representing Telecom and i don't care if they are contractors, on commission or anything.... if they lie to get you to sign up to a product, then the company they represent should be held responsible. If they have to, don't pay them on a commission basis.

If you ever have a salesman making such a claim then get them to put it in writing. Any such claims would be basis to any contract you make with the company, and as their agent the company would be held to that statement. Plus it should, theoretically, trump any generic claims (such as a clause in the contract saying that the company does not guarantee any minimum standard) though this will turn on the facts.

And if they refuse to put any such statement in writing then disregard it.

Personally BigTime is back to its old fantastic self for me. I notice the occasional limitation but nothing that is unusable. I don't game often or use ventrillo, but StarWars Galaxies was very lagged at times (and a horrible horrible game) but League of Legends seemed to be ok at any time of the day.
