Telecom advised me that an outage with Alcatel caused performance issues for their broadband users on the weekend 28-29 November.  Is this the same issue?  Prior to this outage I was getting 6-8MB/sec download speed but since then my line won't go over 2MB/sec.  Telecom are telling me it is unlikely they will investigate as 2MB is "acceptable".  I'm plugging my way through the speedtest stuff they want me to do... will keep you posted on any developments.

How are you getting 6-8MB/s?
I'm only getting 1.6MB/s and thats at 8am..
(Or did you mean MBit/s, not MegaByte/s?)

I think he may mean Megabits per second as those speeds are impossible on ADSL2+ and even VDSL (which Big Time is not a plan for either)
