Ive had a look over some of the guides but am still confused as to what is needed for a mobile to work correctly on the XT network. i have the opportunity to get an N97 from the US through a friend but i have a feeling its not going to work on the telecom network.

It seems to have the right numbers (bands etc) but not the right letters (gsm, wcdma)

This is what i am looking at getting:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00295RBNI/ref=s9_simi_gw_s0_p107_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1WFSR86SYYW47RWS5WRT&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

it seems to match or be pretty close to the one offered on parallelimported under the XT network section so
thats where i got the idea that it may work.

Could someone confirm or set me straight?

thanks heaps.

Quote: "Unlocked quad-band GSM cell phone compatible with 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies and US/International 3G compatibility via 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA plus GPRS/EDGE capabilities" from linked Amazon page.

Yes it will work with XT as it supports 850 UMTS/HSDPA/WCDMA

Yeps, good to go on XT as noted by thefatmould.

Many smartphones are:

Quad Band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 which is 2G technology

and

certain flavours of 3G technology which is WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA, eg 900/2100 or 850/2100 or as in this N97 which is 850/1900/2100.

The main detail you're looking for is at the 3G bands. In New Zealand:

XT = 3G 850 WCDMA only

Vodafone = 2G GSM and 3G 900/2100 WCDMA
