VENTRILO (VoIP) – Voice Audio Streaming Application

My Environment:

- I have a PAID Vent server hosted in Australia (initially I was getting 20ms pings – now getting 400ms+)

- Problem experienced on multiple vent servers (hosted in: US & Aus etc).  Varied port numbers (often on a high port number like 22200).

Vent Problems:

- Since Jan 2010:

Increasing Ping Times (US server's avg ping rose from 130ms to 850ms).

- Since Feb/March 2010

VoIP is often unusable (even when using various codec's on the lowest quality settings).  During sustained talking (5sec+) the audio stream stops coming through (their green light stays on) then the audio stream eventually comes through about 5-10 Minutes later!

#Note: I did not experience any service degradation to Ventrilo during my previous 6months on the Big Time plan.

~ Q: Is it possible that it’s detecting the constant streaming data (or the port number) as torrent type traffic, and applying traffic shaping rules to it specifically?

All of these have been mentioned throughout both threads but ill add my experiences.

* Buffering anything but Youtube is a non event, it simply doesn't happen, 2 minutes of buffering for 5 seconds of action (if your lucky, chances are it will time out before that happens). Ustream, justin.tv are the most problematic for me.
* Gmail https issue that has been well documented.
* Facebook can be unusable at times. Especially facebook games which can take several minutes to load.
* Steam content server speed is pathetic, downloading battlefield bad company 2 was a nightmare.

* Gmail fails to load sometimes.
* Almost impossible to use multiple PCs on the net at the same time.
* Downloads slow to bytes. Multi threading can help, but last thread often slows to 0.

I've been having problems mainly related to gaming.

* PS3 frequently drops from PSN, as well as disconnects from MW2 and BF:BC2 often
* Steam takes very long to load sometimes (5 minutes to 30 minutes)
* MW2 on steam has terrible ping and takes long to find games
* Occasionally, gmail takes extremely long to load (5 minutes +)

My Issues:

* Streaming Video during 'peak' time is impossible
* Was able to download at normal broadband speed from 2am - 3:30am, then it just slowed right down to 11-15kbps.
* Why so damn slow during 'peak' hours? I am already thinking of switching back to my 3gb plan because I will not get my moneys worth from the Big Time plan anyway.
* 9am to 2am? that gives us 7 hours of what should be 'max speed'. when the plan first came out it used to be 4pm to 12pm, why has the gap increased SO much, who is really going to be online after 2am when they work?
*How can my internet usage effect the house next door, or someone in wellington?

actually, now im downloading at 0.8kbps

[1] Streaming anything not YouTube is throttled down to unusable speed
[2] Effective 1Mbps (at most) speed during what is considered peak period.
[2i] - downloading from ATI Drivers : 10KB/s
[2ii] - downloading from Nvidia Drivers 5.6KB/s

  • Java based games are being shaped from 9am to 2am. As soon as it hits 2am they work perfect. Once it hits 9am, they lose connection to their servers almost instantly (pogo.com and runescape in particular. yahoo games seem to work fine)

  • Ventrillo pings are insane. They go from 150-200 pings to 25000+

  • Downloads have just very recently been throttled from near max speed during off peak times to 5-10% of what they used to be.

Hi there guys,

I have just looked at these forums as I have been having poor HTTP downloads (Big Time plan) for the last few days. I am getting only around 120KB/s from 2 sites I always get the full bandwidth (1.2MB/s) from.

I hardly ever use torrents so cant comment on whether those speeds are poor for me.

The other place I get poor speeds on is the Playstation Network. I'm talking like a 17MB file can take 40 mins to download - which is absolutely disgusting. I have been having that issue ever since (3 months) I changed to Big Time though.

Now, I saw in one of the previous posts about XTRA capping HTTP downloads on the Big Time plan. Is this true or just an assumption at this stage??

If anyone can answer that, I'd be happy.

Incidentally I changed back to the Pro plan last night, at least until this gets sorted. I am also considering switching to Orcon as XTRA has been annoying me for a while now.

Cheers

Hi there Nate....

My issue is regarding the Big Time plan. Not sure if you've misunderstood me or vice versa. I have been on the Big Time plan since it came out, but due to the issues I have had for the last few weeks and particularly the last 4 days with 120 KB/s downloads I changed back to the Pro Plan last night. As soon as the issues are resolved, I will change back to Big Time. Cheers.

  • Chatroulette and Omegle video is unusable basicly. The other party can't see my webcam.

  • Ping/Lag on COD-MW2 (xbox) is hurrendous (300ms +)

  • Downloading drivers from HP (100MB GPU or 50MB bluetooth/wifi drivers) start at about 10kb/s then go down slower and slower and slower (getting from 1kb/s to 900b/s) then it just gets to 0 and stops

  • Java unable to install because it needs to download packages but times out

  • Facebook takes about half a minute to completely load, then internal links take about 40seconds to load if not more.

  • Various international sites just timed out while trying to load.

  • www.xbox.com take about 5minutes to load the accounts page

Have you guys tried removing the filter on your line. I was only getting 256 KB/s download and 756 KB/s upload (which is weird), then I removed the filter and WOW!!!

2.5 MB/s download and 756 KB/s upload, and I live 7 KM/s from the exchange!!!

1)The main sites I use - facebook, tvnz ondemand, dailymotion, zshare - are unusable, just too slow to stream and download

2) It was fine for 2 days last week but now back to what seems to be dial up speeds

I have contacted Telecom but there is no fault on my line so after a bit of online research myself I found lots of disgruntled people having the same problems. No solution yet.

My own solution will be to wait 1 more week to improve and if no different I will look into a different plan and/or probably better yet a different ISP!
