Does anyone know how the 083 Prefix on the Telecom network is structured? Can you call directly to mailboxes somehow with an extension of this prefix?

Went to register another 0800 number (which I normally do over the phone) on the internet and it gives you the option of a number starting with 083 as a prefix. I assume it has something to do with messaging as the message access number is 083-210.

05 Telstra and other networks access (059 0508 etc)
06 botton nth island
07 central nth island
08 VSP or voice platfrorms, holds the "intelligent network" which can re-rout calls effectivly
09 auckland/northland calling area

08796 & 08797 are used for eftpos dialup aswell.

Useful trick if eftpos suddenly dies is to pick up the phone and dial the number. One of them is Eftpos NZ - ANZ, the other is Paymark - ETSL. If you don't hear modem tones, eftpos is down.

Can't remember which is which off the top of my head tho.
