Flashcards:

WHO has accepted that rate? I sure haven't...$500 for 500GB? Seriously?

Agreed, You can buy something physical to store the data on cheaper than the cost of delivering virtual bits across a wire. I find that to be insane.

Hell, the $20 rate that telecom are charging is more than buying and posting SD cards, good to see they have finally seen sense to drop that, but only to $2 - not good enough. 20c perhaps, but IMO that is still too high to pay to have a few mins of HD video delivered to you.

A realistic price based upon the realities of our existing market and people's ideas of what they want to pay for a service are two totally different things. Assuming no hourly restriuctions or shaping exist $500 for 500GB of data is a realistic price to be paying.

What im most concerned about is the telecom rep calling my house asking me to resign on for the plan last week to get cheaper pricing, if i find out that im being held to a contract from this sign on i will be very unhappy.

Has anyone else had this happen in the last week or so?

tragedy of the commons fits pretty well here.

" a situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently, and solely and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource even when it is clear that it is not in anyone's long-term interest for this to happen."

when you have a finite resource (bandwidth) and give people incentive to use as much as they can with no restrictions (unlimited plan) then they ruin the experience for everyone

Would have been nice to see them try a few things eg: raise the price $10 and have a soft cap like many ISP's in the UK and US have (~200GB).

Oh well maybe next time they will look in per user traffic management technology like Anagran which has come a long way in recent years. DPI classification based rules seem to fail in NZ due to lack of scale.

The contract is with Telecom Broadband, not a specific plan. But as said before you will be free to move away to another ISP without being held by it.

richms:
It doesnt work for slingshot. A friend changed to it and had to change his work from home schedule because it is so useless in the free offpeak times.

I am lucky to get 2 gigs a night down in the free offpeak times, yet during the day I can max the line out on the same torrents.

Really? I can do 5-10GB a night offpeak. And I don't take any steps to get around their shaping.

Also reading how easy it was to get around Telecom's shaping (going by the referrer? um yeah sure that will work) it's not surprising it failed. ISP have being doing shaping for years and while there is a continual war, it seems Telecom was stuck 5+ years ago in how they set up their systems.

There is no doubting the announcement was made to coincide with budget day. It will now get no news coverage and will just be ignored. Happens all the time.

Boooooo!
Big time worked well for me. Id get max speed at all hours. Downloading content from steam games the only issue=slow.

If there are any new plans coming out Id hope there would be at LEAST a 100GB plan. 40 60GB just wont cut it anymore.

could be,  but then why would Voda announce their new Prepay rates on this day.  Wouldn't they want to get them front and centre? (maybe they don't?)

Considering any decent analysis is going to compare them to 2degrees and they're going to come up short why would they want them front and centre? Also their new plan annoucement also coincided with their annoucement they were pulling the TalkAddon in a blatant move to try and avoid regulation (well there wasn't much time for them to do that but do you really think it didn't occur to their marketing people that budget day was coming up so why not wait for that?). However I appreciate this is OT here so I won't discuss it further.

That plan is crap. This is great for vodafone since noone will be giving them stick about making something that almost sucks as hard as their "base" plans for being useless in todays market.

chiefie: Oh no! All those on BigTime downloading those Linux ISOs will be feeling the pain!!!

You would if you had Telecom's lowest plan with a 3GB cap

You'd waste half of it just downloading the latest Ubuntu and Kubuntu ISOs (Which I actually do by the way)

Add in some Youtube, Windows Updates, nVidia\ATi graphics driver downloads, legal music downloads from Jamendo etc and you could waste your cap in a day easily without any piracy at all.

TELECOM TAKE NOTE:

I would be happy to pay $40-50 for a 50GB or so cap, because that's about how much I use. Your current capped plans are just too expensive for the caps they provide (compared to other ISPs)
