Ragnor: So you could go on Total Home Starter (with no addons) and as long as you've bought a Tivo from Telecom you in practice get unlimited that is not heavily managed (like normal plans and unlike Big Time) adsl for $70/month!

Sure there is the one off cost to buy the Tivo ($718), or you pay that monthly rate (~$20/month for 36 months) but you get the Tivo out of that.

This can't be intentional or last surely, given that they are shutting down Big Time for being not economically viable.

Or until they fix the problem which could be tommorrow or the next day or it could be next month ???
But you will have already bought a TiVo so TiVo sales will go up !
And you will locked into a total home contract again...

If Telecom take away unmetered TiVo usage then he can take it back because its not living up to the standard he expected when he bought it (ie. he could say he bought it because of free data usage with it and if they take it away then Telecom have wrecked it for him persay)

And its not a problem btw, its intentional. Everyone knows that. Its advertised everywhere

Therein lies the problem.. If Telecom somehow manages to figure out how to segregate Tivo traffic from other traffic, and only make TIVO unmetered, it would be a lot harder to return it.

People in this thread are only looking at this from a point of view of "Unofficial Big Time Replacement", and would want a guarantee that for the duration of them having the Tivo contract that ALL their data would be unmanaged and unmetered :-)

I guess you could argue that torrents are just to get more tivo content lol.

as far as im aware the tivo usage is seperate to standard plan usage, it will remain un metered no matter what plan you are on.. but you wont get unlimited broadband on your computer too

That is the case. TiVo goes through a proxy or something and the server must see its a TiVo and not manage the traffic. Because I remember when they had a few TiVo's stolen before launch Telecom traced them by the IP or something and found where they were.

No you need some kind of internet plan from Telecom for unlimited TiVo usage

Given how this discussion on Tivo and 'unlimited' usage is going I should clarify a couple of things.

If you want a Tivo, great, if you have a Telecom broadband connection and a Tivo the traffic Tivo uses over your broadband connection is not counted towards your data cap whatever that might be.  If for some reason a fault condition should arise that means, say, for example that all of your usage was not counted, it is not part of the Tivo service and of course with any fault condition it will be resolved.

Buying a Tivo to take advantage of a fault and then trying to return it after that fault is cleared will only result in you being unable to return the Tivo, as I have mentioned if you want a Tivo, great, go for it.

(apologies for going off topic, but need to clear this up)

If you want to discuss this further with me, best to send a dm

And is completly unrelated to the sudden huge uptake of Tivo purchases by Telecom staff :-P

hah!  I believe that would be due to the price ... anyway I believe its generally well understood that if someone wants something 'tweaked' on their broadband I am open to bribes (hint hint anyone from mobile who reads this, the milestone is coming out soon right?)

Doozy you seem to have the inside ear at Telecom, is there another plan coming out prior to the August 13 demise of Big time, or it just a fact we have seen the last of unlimited plans, from them?

Doozy is the broadband man inside Telecom... But really I am not sure he would disclose any plans before those being officially announced (or anyone else really).
