was just saying if using utorrent if turn on downloaded column you often see how much really download.. utorrent can be used and is used by companies to also share large files doesnt have to be so called illegal stuff

but bmextreme from lp23.com is a handy tool that converts packets to said Kbytes/MB/GB readings and reports download speeds getting as well.. 2 weeks free pro trial should be enough to spot a problem

Well its the 18th... News is that Alcatel have come back saying they can't see any faults.. However Hamish at Telecom is following it up especially as someone else has presented the same fault with their own data... I'll keep on keeping on and see where we get to now.
Cheers

Hi all sorry for the lack of an update but been quite busy lately:- Bassically still the same happening. Alcatel apparently made some config changes over the easter weekend but there was no difference at my end regarding the usage figures. I gave telecom an update of my tracking spreadsheet on tuesday and am now waiting the next idea.
cheers

I thought I'd noticed a large difference myself but I missed one day in my router records where I know I downloaded a large game from Steam.

Mines still seems roughly correct.

I thought i had been unaffected by these usage meter discrepencies but apparently not.

A couple of days ago i downloaded a linux iso and a clients database with both files totaling in at 2GB, add in my normal browsing of around .5GB and i thought it would be sweet as i had a 4.5GB surplus.

So you can imagine my surprise when i check my usage that my surplus has been wiped out to 0. Went and checked my offline counter and that said i had used 2.6GB which is what i had excpected.

Anyway i left it as that as my usage as been accurate every other day this month, until yesterday.

Yesterday again i needed to download a large file of 1.2GB plus my normal browing clocked in at 1.7GB on my offine counter. just checked telecom usage meter and it says i used 2.9GB.

A few days early in the month i had done some heavy downloading of 3GB a day but this was made up of many smaller files not one large download and this usuage was recorded fine.

It seems that large files are counted more than they shoud be.

(FYI: none of the files i downloaded were torrents so i'm not forgetting about counting upload etc.)

also my wifi is switched off and i am the only computer on the network.

Not sure if it is worth complaining to telecom - can't imagine me getting any sort of data refund without months of usage stats being recorded which i'm not prepared to do.

hi
STill waiting for a result
I have been told that there are at least 3 others who have logged faults the same 2 in Palmerston north and one in Dunedin I beleve. So anyone having the same problem please log a fault with telecom.
cheers

I have just discovered this thread and am reassured to see that I am not alone in having this problem.
I try to keep under my 40GB cap using the freeware NetMeter to monitor my usage but for a few months have found my Telecom usage meter to be reading (and billing me) around 30-40% more.
I thought it must be due to some leakage or problem in my system but do not have the technical knowledge to investigate.
I live in Dunedin and will start being more systematic in logging my stats than I have been to date.
Thanks to everyone trying to sort this out. As has been said, if this was an issue affecting electricity meters, there would be uproar!

Has anyone received an update from Telecom about the usage meter issue? I have been having the same issue where I am getting charged for much more data than I am actually using, up to 2x as much as far as I can tell.

I first noticed this on the 23rd February after the quake. I had no power at all but the telecom usage meter shows me as using 300MB of data. I am now running 2 data meters on both of the PCs in the house which are both giving the same results to within a few MB of each other and the combined usage of both PCs has been about half of what Telecom's meter shows. I have changed the wireless password regularly and even turned it off completely to see if it was just a neighbour stealing data, but their usage meter has not changed.

I've been putting off calling Telecom as I've had bad experiences in the past with their call centre being totally useless and unhelpful, so I'm hoping someone else has had some progress that gives me hope that I'm not going to get into another 3 month arguement with Telecom.

Not wanting to downplay a potential issue, but can I state a few points?

Superted is seeing a difference, so he is working with Telecom with that, which is all good. I hope that arrives at a conclusion soon.

If users call in for anything, a case is logged as with all calls in. This is not logging a fault. A case is started as all calls are case numbered, the issue is then looked into. It may or may not be a fault, but readers here should not assume that there are a number of usage meter faults recorded. That is the wrong expectation. There are calls in as those above have said, re usage meter concerns, cases are created and looked into. If there was a usage meter issue, that would be well indicated by the number of calls in, as distinct from the usual calls in re usage issues. Many users have usage concerns, these end up being the kids, the updates, the wireless, the iOS update in a 1Gb plan, etc.

Superted, if you want to PM me with your case number, I can check the progress for you if you like.

One thing to note for all, the meter updates every 2 to 4 hours. If you get up in the morning, the usage you will see will include the 2 to 4 hours that you used before bed, but would not have shown up then.

Another good check is to log the times the PC was off and the modem was on. There will be usage (network stay alive data, very very minimal, maybe 30KB per hour.) If there was a usage issue, you would expect those PC down hours to have unexplained data?

Cheers

Hi Telecom is still looking at the issue of myself and a few others They have told me That apparently I am the only one not in the 03 area code. If anyone else not in the south Island is having these Over Usage problems and has logged a case with telecom I'd like to know. If you think you have the same problem I suggest you use the figures from the modem as described on page 2 of this thread record them for a few days and compare with the telecom figures.
As a point of interest we got limited to modem speed for 3 days "terrible time:-)" and the difference dropped to 0%. it went back up to 25%-40% after we came back to full speed though:-(

cheers

This issue is thankfully reaching the MSM, let's hope it gets some faster resolution! http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10731116

I have been monitoring my usage for the last 20 days, Telecom daily usage meter readings are 20-50% higher than those recorded by NetMeter and BMExtreme. I live in Dunedin.

That is, if there is an issue.
