Hi all, I've been bouncing back and forth between Telecom and Orcon for a while in hopes of better bandwidth and fewer surprise overage bills.

I've recently switched back to Telecom in anticipation of the ADSL2+ and VDSL2 rollout which is supposed to happen this year. The ISP told me that it looks like I'm currently already connecting at ADSL2+ and seems like the modem reports that as well (Telecom's wholesale webpage though reports that ADSL2+ isn't supposed to happen until end of year).  I found a correctly named cabinet less than 400 meters from my house.  However, it's much smaller than a whisper cabinet and looks pretty old so wondering if I found the wrong one.

Could someone weigh in here how poor my reported stats are from my modem, given the short distance to the cabinet? Suggestions for what I should do next to try and improve these numbers? Splitter?

Thanks!

You are most likely connected to an exchange at maybe 1.6 km away, cable run is around 2.2 km. Also, because the sync is so poor you may have a line fault. You should get around 11 to 12 Mbps down with the appropriate hardware.

57.dB downstream line attenuation is around the equivalent of 4km+ of cable between your house and the exchange/cabinet.

If you really are 4km from the exchange/cabinet there's not much you can do about that, however if you are not 4km from the cabinet/exchange you either have an internal wiring issue or an external one.

My guess would be internal which could be rectified by getting a master filter/splitter installed to separate the ADSL jack from the rest of your phone jacks.

How many phone jacks in your home? What make and model modem/router are you using?

Sounds like you've visited www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps but you didn't mention what exchange or cabinet you are connected to, it's usually a three letter code plus /something for a cabinet.

Cheers for the replies.

According to the wholesale map, i should be connected (i would think) RAG/B.  Yesterday I managed to locate a box that was labelled as such (not a whisper cabinet though), and under 400 meters away.  According to that website, it's scheduled in December for an upgrade to ADSL2+/VSDL2.

There is an exchange (cabinet) downtown, which between 3 and 4 km away depending on the route you drive.  Given that Rag/B is so close, would I definitely be connected to that one? The couple times that I've asked which exchange I was hooked up to, they said they didn't have any way of knowing.

ST536 v6 thompson speedtouch is my modem. I only have two jacks in the house. No alarms or sky. Making proper use of filters.

Thanks again!

The older cabinets are passive just for aggregating lines from an area together to take them back to the exchange.

Your ADSL connection will currently be terminated on the gear in the exchange hence low line rate due to the distance.

You should be in for quite a boost in line rate after they put the new whisper cabinet in at the end of the year.

Many props for the reply. Because my modem was synching at ADSL2+ I assumed there must have been a problem since the cabinet was so close by.

Thanks again!

ps: looking forward to VDSL2

Sorry, I read the up attenuation as the down attenuation.
