its easy just simply use Odin and flash voodoo kernel. then download SGS kernel Flasher on the market to flash a different kernel once you have flashed voodoo kernel. don't rely on superoneclick it doesn't always work. i just rooted a friends phone who has the telecom rom 2.3.3.. hes running Darkcore2.9 kernel now with lagfix enabled (ext4) ... ;]

I've searched for Odin, the voodoo kernel and other bits and pieces and there are so many links to different versions of this and other versions of that, that I have no idea which ones to use.  Would it be possible for someone to provide links to the correct versions here?

Thanks

Odin 1.7: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=53DU706X

Make sure you know what your doing before proceeding into rooting your phone.

Steps:

1. Power off Phone then take off your sd card and sim card Make sure you are on debugging mode on your usb settings. use the 3 button combo (volume down, home button and power button hold them down together.)

2. Open odin then click PDA and browse the Voodoo Kernel you donwloaded above (DO NOT EXTRACT ONCE DOWNLOADED)

3. Make sure to untick re-partion and leave Auto-reboot and F.Reset Time open.

4. click start. then that should flash the kernel in. it should take 7 seconds to flash a kernel then once done it will reboot.

PS: you should have superuser access once you've done everything

PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT ONCE YOU ROOT YOUR PHONE YOUR WARRANTY WILL BE VOID.

eXDee: Kies is terrible. "MTP USB Device"wouldn't install. After much trial and error and several computers later i finally got it working, no clue how because the guides online for this problem didn't work.
Hate to think what this must be like for a user who doesn't even know what a driver is.

I am very glad this phone isn't mine and I have a HTC phone instead of a samsung one, and thats pretty much confirmed I won't be buying one in the future.

Kies is one of the worse bits of software I have ever had the misfortune to use..

 I TOTALLY agree!!

Just a footnote re Kies. I have a friend who has just given up trying to get his to work but telecom are going to do the update FREE for him and have given him a loan phone, so there ARE options when Kies doesn't work (which seems to be often)

I had the same problem trying to get the phone to connect to Kies yesterday.
Couldn't get phone to connect to Kies yesterday.
Removed external Sandisk 16GB SD Card - still wouldn't connect.
Reset phone in Settings/Privacy/Factory data reset (remember it wipes the phone !) - still wouldn't connect.
Uninstalled Kies from laptop, reset, downloaded Kies and reinstalled - Phone connected straight away.
The update option came up straight away and 10-15 minutes later the update was finished.

Spent the next hour getting all my apps back on the phone. Most, but not all, are in the Market under 'My apps'
The only problem I've had so far is with the BlueAnt S4 app which I really like. It reads out texts over the handsfree as they come in while you're driving. It appears it's not compatible with 2.3 so would love to find an alternative.
Otherwise the phone runs great. Things seem a lot snappier and should be able to use Skype now.

Like many other I had issues with kies. reinstalled Kies and connected straight away. then during download disconnected and wouldn't reconnect. tried again next day and no prob. installed 2.3.3 and looks great. heaps of good new features. again kies won't connect to my phone but i don't care until the next release when hopefully they have sorted it.

Apart from issues with Kies when I first got my phone most of the connection issues have been related to using the wrong cable (a generic one) and not having the latest version - also it takes a while sometimes to connect but it does get there.  Having said that I wont need it again unless there is another update.

Very happy with the way the install went and absolutely no issues since and moving around the phone and menus and scrolling has been good.  It does make me wonder why people want to install custom ROMS and what advantage that offers as it currently does everything I can imagine I would want the phone to do.

Also very happy with the default browser and while I have tried a few of the others I keep coming back to the one installed.

old3eyes: Amber.

Can this be done at the Telecom stores??

Due to the lack of response from Amber to this question I guess the Telecom stores will not do any upgrades??

I have a friend in Auckland, who having trouble with Kies, took his ph into telecom shop.  They gave him a loaner and sent his ph away for a free upgrade so the answer is yes, telecom are doing the upgrades.

Possibly with the Kies Registry Patcher? but I've never actually used it though!

Ok may have found a way to upgrade it by using Check FUS to get the required files and then using Odin, will report back tomorrow after I give it a try (can't do it now as the phone is at work)
