Ok so I have just upgraded to a palm 650 through work... its awesome don't know how i organized work before it ??
One small prob...Telecom bites again....Yell

Telecom advertise that the 650 is pxtmsg capable like most of their camera phones. Well we have been misled !!
You can only send pxt messages via the versa mail app across the data connection. so you can (according to them)
only send to email...as they stated when I rang them, they cant send pxtmsgs from the 650 to other pxt phones....

Well thats utter bollocks. They have disabled the messaging functionality so you can only use versamail/data for PXT.
A work colegue has 2 palm 650's one with Vodafone and one with telecon. The vodafone palm can send mms/pxt messages with no problems to other pxt capable phones....AGhhhhhhh

So unless you have a data connection (which isnt that cheap) added to your account you cant sent pxt from the 650 to other phones.
This is a major problem as they state on their site pxtmsg capable !!! This is very misleading.

Does anyone have a solution or work around??

If not does anyone have the same problem? As I am thinking of contacting the commerce commission once again about their advertising.

Welcome to Geekzone Dodgy... I think you will notice some will make it clear (I will do now before others) that PXT is a Vodafone trademark, so it shouldn't apply to the service provided by other operators.

Ok, having said that.... Telecom is another operator, using another platform. Not all mobile phones support all features, it's a fact of life. AFAIK Telecom does not cripple their phones, so I think the "Telecom bites again" tag is a bit unfair.

If multimedia messaging is something important I'd recommend moving to another phone model with support for this. And if multimedia messaging is even more important then certainly you should either test a model at the store by sending a message to a friend on another network to see if it arrives safe and sound. If not then the only alternative is to join the other network.

In reality the companies implement an infrastructure that allows inter-messaging to happen but they can't control all features in all phones, as much as they try, and I think they try.

For example, to be fair you should read all the threads about people trying to remove the Vodafone branding from their mobile phones. Som people complain the branding is so much it gets on the way.

So each network have their pros and cons. Everyone needs to check their needs before commiting to one or another.

By the way, the page for the Palm Treo 650 on Telecom New Zealand says

Snap a photo and email it quickly with the Treo 650's integrated VGA camera and email functionality

The Terms and Conditions says:

Photo messages sent to email addresses and text capable mobile phones that are not Photo Messaging capable will be held at www.xtra.co.nz/viewmsg for 30 days after they are viewed and 60 days if they are unviewed. Photo Messages will then be automatically deleted. Xtra reserve the right to delete Photo Messages without notice
.

It's pretty much what Vodafone does as well.

Can you show us where it says the 650 can send photo messages directly to other photo messaging phones.

Telecom has always been very clear about their camera enabled PDAs having the capability to send pics via email using a data plan, and nothing else.

i think the software packages available generally only work on devices that are MMS capable (e.g. the GSM versions)

I had the same problem when I made the mistake of getting a treo 600 back in the day. Turns out that MMS could be added with s software update to the phone but the network didnt want to know about it. Evend up returning it after a few months of back and forth with telecom staff.
