Speedtest.net confirms .38 of a Mb/s. Plenty of data left.. Is it just me, or a wider problem? I've been on hold to Telecom for 15 min now to find out.

Does it matter? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise somethings not right... Loading web pages etc

Is it an aerial cable or underground? Is it snowing or raining? Could it be some water in the pipes if this is underground?

If this is not widespread, could it be interference from a new device you plugged in? When was the last time you checked your internal wiring? Could the demarc connection be corroded or broken?

Yes Ham it does matter.

There's a big storm over the country.  I have problems in wellington currently because of snow.

Sky is out for customers, and my guess is snow on the dish.  That will be causing more people to be using net as their TV is out.

Speed tests go to different servers.  If you're using a server that's over a compromised link then its performance will be down as a result.

Johnr is a senior guy for one of the bigger providers.  If he asks a question at a time like this then it pays to just give a straight answer even if you don't get why it might be relevant.

For all I know, he's trying to get a picture of faults around the co and may be helping other pplz at the same time.

I've already been on other lists asking other operators if they're seeing faults to get a picture of where problems are.

Other operators will be following lists to get a feel for where there are problems - say way the CCC are using those earthquake indicator buildings in the CBD.

Johnr is also attempting to get some scope of your ability to know how to best help you.  :)

Nothing has changed with our setup, it was fine 2 hours ago... I got through to Telecom after about half an hour.. She said she tested my line between the exchange and the modem and got 7Mbps so she is convinced our modem is broken. I'm not so sure but they are the experts.

On my Telecom ADSL connection in Chch I currently get 12.24Mbit down / 800kbps up, using http://speedtest.telecom.co.nz/

This is with a 14488/946 ADSL sync.

Ham, do you see the point?

I'm on 15/2 hfc and I suspect if I speed test my gateway I'll get 15/2

The one I did initially, and the one Telecom told us to do didn't say where they were located, either way I have to wait 20 odd seconds for a page to load, lol. Maybe rats are eating our cabling for warmth.

Actually I don't recall where it is exactly... Based on the very short tracert and the times I suspect it's in Akl, probably MDR.

Don't quote me on that though - I'm just inferring from very similar behaviour to other servers I know are in MDR.

Cheers - N

Yes, we understand it's slower and frustrating... but we are interested in understanding why it's slow, figuring it out and working to improve it for you and everyone else who might also be effected.

With respect to the helpdesk... trust me, the people helping you here are way more experts than the level 1 helpdesk :)  I would consider myself a bunny in the midist of some of this talent! :)

and it's obvious to us that you're not expert... but if you work with the guys here and post the info they ask for, then you'll quickly become far more expert and be able to offer more help to others in the future as well... that's how I got my knowledge and so do many :) :) :)

So please, start by running some more tests and posting the results and we will talk you though trying to figure it out.
