Guess that's what I get for living on the Kapiti Coast, good coverage out to sea though ;)

Well, you could spend $30 on 2degrees and get 1GB and 2500 SMS. That's been available now for, oh, since August last year give or take.

Am I missing something, how can you do this for $30 on prepay?

Edit

I see, $10 2500 txt pack and $20 1GB data. The only trouble with that is you've got to be in a 2degrees broadband zone which is patchy to say the least

Well, it's getting less patchy by the day. This year we've added Hamilton, Tauranga, Hastings, Wanganui, Whangarei, and Palmerston North, with more to come both this year and next. Some of them aren't "officially" broadband zones yet, but as long as you are within the 2degrees coverage, it works.

What about Dunedin? We've waited forever.

Only the $20 one, which is good because I used my last $20 topup about a week before they announced stopping it.

I thought this issue was sorted out by the Commerce Commission and it was illegal and anti competitive to lock handsets.

I heard from a very much second hand source that frequency locking was something they were looking into - ie locking to 850mhz 3G only or something like that, as opposed to a sim lock, but achieving the same thing. Such a rumour probably doesn't have much merit to it though for obvious reasons.
SaltyNZ:
eXDee: If theres something that can replace my current smartphone double plan (5000 texts, 480mb data for $28) then i'll happily change to it.
Tis annoying that no one wants to cater to the $30 price point for smartphones, i want roughly 500mb of data, and perhaps a good few hundred texts (ideally 500+).

Yeah i've been considering this, it's probably what i'll end up doing if some other offer doesn't come out soon. I just really like telecoms 3G speeds and nice low latency.

If this goes ahead I do hope they will offer a substantial subsidy on the prepaid handset.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/462505/Vodafone-relents-on-mobile-lock

Last updated 19:53 27/05/2008

Vodafone has backed off a controversial decision to lock its mobile handsets under pressure from the Commerce Commission.

Telecommunications commissioner Ross Patterson told The Independent Financial Review he had expressed concern about Vodafone's "intentions". The mobile firm had said it would charge $50 to unlock new handsets from April if people wanted to shift to another mobile provider in New Zealand or use a provider other than Vodafone for overseas roaming.

tbh i think this locking of handsets is a harmful precedent to start up again in NZ, we've been free from that crap aside from that minor vodafone hiccup.

i hope vodafone and 2degrees throw plenty of crap at them if they do.

Original discussion on Geekzone from 2008 (and your linked article IIRC was another example of MSM getting stories from Geekzone, but that's not the point now).

Commerce Commission never ruled it "illegal".
