freitasm: Back to the topic. Seeing that Telecom NZ works closely with Sprint, could the Samsung IP830-w be the one? And it's a Pocket PC: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=6645

Ooohh!  I'll have one of those!!!

Cheers, Stevo

Ahhh...

Oh well, in that case, Telecom won't have RUIM phones. People would be able to parallel import phones and use them on Telecom's network, right?

All the CDMA Nokias have a RUIM slot, but Telecom have disabled this on all their phones. My guess is that they would use a RUIM in the world mode phones that would only work when the phone fell back to GSM. They probably will never enable RUIM on the rest of their phones as people would then be able to bring any phone in and try to hook it up. However there would be a lot more problems than importing a GSM handset and buying a SIM for it. Since there is less uniformity across CDMA networks than GSM ones then each phone has to have the software customised and the phone intensively tested to make sure it will work on the CDMA network.

I'm guessing Telecom will do something along the lines of issuing a RUIM to customers with this handset, and do the equivalent of an ESN change from the phone to the RUIM when the customer goes overseas, as this would prevent the importation of CDMA handsets.

You've seen it? Do you work for Telecom? If so then you would be under NDA and unable to say anything about the phone.
