Fraktul: My sister dropped her iphone 4s which shattered the front of it, walked into Covent Garden Apple store and they replaced it on the spot.

As if that wasn't enough she did exactly the same thing a few months later...and they replaced again on the spot.

Now that's service..

I had heard of apple doing that too, overseas though. Shows they care about their customers, as it probably doesn't cost them much to keep a customer happy, and that customer then tells their friends about the positive experience. Great marketing.

Just as a FYI - my personal experience was 3 business days for the phone to be sent off, confirmed that it was in fact dead and then me getting the call to go back into the store because I'm entitled to a brand new phone. The guys in the store however give you the worst case scenario timeframe. This is that if it's a bigger problem (in terms of repair) then they don't want you guys upset when we haven't met the original timeframe the people in store have told you.

Most store guys are good and explain that it could take up to 2 weeks but usually it takes xxx days.

Gee, having read this thread now - are the new 4 and 4S phones so bad that we have at least 3 people (including a telecom representative) who have experienced them being faulty after hours/days of purchase?

This is not good. It does not give one much faith that purchasing the item is a good idea.

I'd know probably a dozen people who have had iPhone 4's replaced under warranty.

Disappointed in Telecom...

Right I brought a Brand new iPhone 4S from telecom the phone lasted 3 hrs and then shut down when doing icloud. I immediately rung apple who advised me to take it back to telecom and get it replaced with a brand new one. Sounds too easy..Wrong

I took it to telecom they checked it and said it was faulty. But said they need to send it away to their service agent. I rung apple from the telecom shop and they said again I should get a new one. I put the telecom rep on the phone to apple and when he got off he told me it was policy to send it away.

They said it would take 3 to 5 days.

After a week I rung apple they were amazed this was happening. They told me to get the phone back from telecom and they would organize me a brand new one. They also advised me that if telecom replaced it at the shop I was to make sure it was a brand new one and not an open box and they were refurbished ones.

I went back into telecom..no they didn't ring me with an update.. They advised me my phone was faulty and they were replacing it..they brought out a refurbished phone and give it to me. I declined the phone and rung Apple again from the shop. Apple told me to get a brand new one. Again I put the the telecom rep on the phone. After 30 mins she got off the phone and told me that Telecoms policy was to replace the phone and it didn't have to be a brand new phone. I told them the iPhone was only 3 hours old and that policy and the law are two different things. I left the store with nothing.

A day later I ring telecom and they tell me they are having meetings with Apple about it. But they are going to get me a brand new phone. Very unhappy with telecom.. it took ten days and I have to buy a new screen protector and bumper.

Cant understand why they didn't just replace it like Apple said. I love Apple customer service but hate telecom.

I would say they were in breach of the CGA and need to have some serious discussions with Apple to sort out their policy.

And yes since getting an iPhone (and needing a replacement within 5 days myself) I have heard a lot of out-of-box failure reports. Not sure if its any more than other brands though.

From the CGA website:

"If the problem is a serious one (the goods are unsafe, or substantially do not meet acceptable quality, fitness for particular purpose, or description or sample), you can choose to:
  • return (reject) the goods and get your money back, or
  • return the goods for a replacement of similar value and type (if the goods are reasonably available as part of the seller's stock ), or
  • keep the goods and have the price reduced to make up for its drop in value"

Wait, aren't apple the ones who supplied a brand new device that failed after 3 hours ...

Personally I wouldn't call that good service, but that's just me.

I think anyone affected/concerned about this should contact the Commerce Commission, so they are aware of what is going on.

Your right of course.

Hey...someone better get hold of the 12 year old at the assembly plant and tell him his pay is being docked to 5c per day because he is not meeting required standards (in jest - with a slither of truth)
