freitasm:
grant_k: Is there any reason I can't pay by Internet Banking?  I would be happy to send $25 if I could do it that way.

Sure, just send me a PM and I will pass bank details and activate your subscription manually.

PM sent.  As others have said, signing up for a subscription is something I've meant to do for ages, just never got around to it.  I don't mind the ads actually, and never use an ad-blocker on any website.  If I get annoyed by the ads on a site, I simply stop using it, and that's never been the case here Smile

This user didn't get the reaction from us he was looking for, hopefully it was a life lesson for him "don't complain about something you get for free, if you find value and want to support somebody then donate" - I see the Subscription as a donation system in a way, it's my way of giving something back to Mauricio for his time and dedication to making this, and maintaining it, in return he rewards me for saying thanks.

Meant to read '[ampersand]quot'?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

You could spend 25 bucks on 3 or 4 drinks at a fancy bar without even trying these days. Sheesh.

I coughed up my $25 because I wanted to give something back to GZ. I'm no technology expert, but I like to try to help people if I can and I sure appreciate all the good advice that I've received.

Keep up the good work mods and Maurito, I for one think you're great.

I wasn't around to see who the OP was - it's killing me.  I had hoped on someone but their profile is still active

Anyway back OT.  I subscribed last year when you did that cheepo thing - won't hesitate again to subscribe when it's my time.  the forum is great, the discussions are lively and unlike the name there is some very useful non-geeky information.

I'm not sure if you have some kind of IP tracking but I wonder if the user has come back to the forum just for old times sake - bit like a stalky xGF type who you can't seem to get rid of!

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Yep likewise I subscribed last year with the good deal and will definitely renew for the same price if available.
I'm out of the IT biz now but still an interested observer, and happy to do my small part to support the GZ.

Cheers,
Joseph

jeffnz: Some of the negative reactions only prove his point about arrogance but that is normal human behavior for some.

What did the OP say about people's arrogance out of interest?

SumnerBoy: Would love to know how many subscriptions have started today - it seems a lot (including myself) have been prompted by the OP's rant to finally start supporting this great forum...maybe it was a Black Flag operation by FM...(kidding)!

Yes, the thought occured to me:

<tinfoilhat>
 "freitasm creates fake profile for two years to push people over the edge to create subscriptions with fake grassroots movement".
</tinfoilhat>

Well, if it was a cunning plan, it was quite effective - I've also got off the fence and signed up...

I missed the original post. From what this thread is saying I assume the complaint was mainly about advertising and having to pay $25 to get rid of it?

This person could have used an ad blocker as others have done and I admit I did too for some time.
Over time I saw posts asking users not to use an ad blocker on Geekzone. I expected to get an email requesting me to stop using it even though I had the ad blocker long before I joined Geekzone - this email never came. This request sat in the back of my mind for a while and then when the $25 subscription price came along I subscribed.

Geekzone has been of great value with many helpful posts from members over the years. It did take a few years for me to appreciate that Geekzone was a useful site for technical and other information in the Off Topic Forum.

Looking forward to many more years on Geekzone.

PM sent for bank a/c details.

Maybe the new GZ project is a commission system for referring people to subscribe. If so the OP must be kicking themselves about now :)
