MikeB4: Opt in is probably okay, as for opt out I dislike opt out features.

You wouldn't need to opt out because to do so, you'd firstly have to tell GeekZone what your city or region is. The field would be blank until you put some data into it.

I am against this because I live in Napier and I don't want anyone to know that.

This is probably redundant, but: You are a MUPPET!

Napier is a nice place to live, so there! :D

DarthKermit:  I do however not wish to disclose my full name on here so I don't do that.

And here I thought whitepages not having any Kermit's was a fault.

Geekzone used to have the little flags that denoted country, not sure how long ago that was though ;)

I think it is a good idea as well. Can't see a privacy issue, especially if it is optional.

I say definitely introduce this feature. Especially as the Trademe messageboards have always had it. And you can't opt out of it on there. So the Geekzone version would be better.

Perhaps an optional field in your user profile that people can see when they click on your username?

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Would PeterReader keep his location hidden showing only that he lives in New Zealand? Do you think he would be prepared to say which city he lives in?

Who says muppet doesn't like Napier?  There are many reasons people might not want others to know where they live, or their real name.  Ask Richard John Bingham (if you can find him).

There seems to be a consensus that an optional location indicator wouldn't be a bad thing for the site. But it's ultimately up to

freitasm to decide.

I wouldn't have thought 20 odd replies constitutes a consensus from umpteen mega gazillion users on Geekzone but I agree, opt in seems ok
