I just found all the ads came back when I was reading through a thread and clicked to the next page. I refreshed and the ads disappeared and the "Thanks for your helping testing..." banner reappear.

This is likely my fault.  I'm currently doing some backend upgrades, while trying to disturb the system as little as possible.

Sorry for the multiple replies, but I wanted to quickly add this note.  There are some improvements we plan to make to the code examples for partnering sites that will help ensure that breaks in communication with our server will minimise the impact on the user experience.  Had those improvements been in place, you almost certainly would not have seen the ads come up.

I think I know when the webpass fails...

If you don't have a browser running and click an email link (Outlook or other non-browser client), your browser will open and load the page BEFORE the webpass add-on starts working - you will then see ads. Any page you open after this will work fine.

Close the browser and try again - every time I clicked an email link starting with a closed browser this happened...

Signed up, logged into the extension but still seeing ads? Am I missing something?

This was a fault on our end, sorry.  I had just pushed out an update and was about to post here that I'd fixed it, but you appear to have already noticed ;)

Is there a way to architect this service so that it doesn't require a browser extension?

Apart from that, works absolutely fine.

Yes, but I think that a plugin offers the greatest advantage.  Advertisers use a variety of method to track you, with one of the primary ways being third-party cookies.  I expect that some of our users are those who are concerned about advertisers tracking them and building up a profile of their personality.  Best practice for such users involves configuring their browser in such a way as to prevent this from being possible.

A browser plugin is, I think, a much easier way for users.  We also have some unannounced features planned for the future that will be made much simpler and more secure to implement through the plugin, than through other methods.

You want both.  Just cookies+JS+AJAX for plebs, extension for people who care about privacy.

Cookies + JS + AJAX requires much more changes to the website code than the plugin, which can be just an additional check on the backend, as we've done.
