I'm curious, what's the purpose of Geekzone Live, if it stops working the moment you go to a different application? I initially thought of it as of a dashboard, that I could, for example have open on the second monitor while working with something else on the main one. But that does not work at all since, once you've switched focus to another app it stops updating.

I'm guessing, there are some people who would just enjoy steering on the screen while doing something else not on their computer like knitting or watching TV, but my gut feeling that these will be a minority.

So what is intended usage/usefulness of Geekzone Live? If you have to switch to the browser tab anyway to get an update you might as well push F5. Well, obviously it's one push less and many people undoubtedly appreciate this, but it feels like a lot of work (implementing Geekzone Live in the first place) for a minor convenience.

What's the deal?

Stops using resources in the background - CPU / bandwidth.

From here... Some people had more than 100 tabs open on Geekzone. If these tabs aren't in focus but continue to update... I mean why would we have those things updating if no one is looking at them? We had days with 100,000 views on those refresh alone. That's a lot of server power for nothing.

So the take away is that you are fine if I disable that for myself with client-side scripting. Cheers!

No. The takeaway is that I get you having more than one update every 60 seconds you will get booted.

100 tabs at once? Why would you?

I sometimes have two or three at most.

You must have changed your opinion since that old thread. But, hey, your site your rules! Thank you for letting me know!

Are those updates preformed on pages other than https://live.geekzone.co.nz/ ?

To me it seems unreasonable to have more than one of the same page opened in a browser, let alone 100. You can open two or three of the same by mistake but not 100.

But that would make sense if *every* geekzone page had live update. However that's not true, is it?
