No.  I am saying that the term free speech has nothing to do with Bill Bennett's articles appearing here.  And if anyone has used it to justify them appearing here, then they do not understand what free speech is.  Practically every reference to free speech in this topic is wrong, and people bringing in "freedom to ignore" highlights this.

Free speech isn't necessarily what you think it is.  And for that matter, we do not have the right to free speech in New Zealand.  There are laws that restrict what you can say.  The laws restricting where you can say things, on the other hand, are an unrelated matter and not related to what free speech is considered to be.

Your being nitpicky. This tangent is about Geekzone homepage posts

But, for the record, via Wiki

Tangent concluded!

"The right to freedom of speech is not explicitly protected by common law in New Zealand but is encompassed in a wide range of doctrines aimed at protecting free speech.[13] An independent press, an effective judiciary, and a functioning democratic political system combine to ensure freedom of speech and of the press.[14] In particular, freedom of expression is preserved in section 14 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 (BORA) which states that:

“Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, including the right to seek, receive, and impart information and opinions of any kind in any form”.

I really don't get what you are banging on about. You keep saying no-one understands what free speech is, but you don't say what you think it is. Depending on how you define it, no-one anywhere enjoys truly 'free' speech, but that doesn't stop most of us getting on with our lives.

If it makes you feel better, consider that Geekzone doesn't cost anything as long as you put up with the ads. The speech you encounter here is, therefore, free.

I guess I could have made that "Articles". Regardless, this is no reason for being rude against authors.

That was pretty heavy handed moderating for a very mild critique.

@compost please read previous reply where I explain I removed the heavy stuff from that post.

Please do not second guess moderators. People should know by now we're pretty fair around here.

Is Bill Bennett a person? Someone who actually writes the articles? I ask because I had always thought those pieces looked like a bot had scraped content from elsewhere and assembled them here. I formed that view because the content seems so press-release like.

Free speech is a societal principle to be able express a view or opinion, even if it is against what most people would consider reasonable, and may even be reprehensible. But freedom of speech doesn't allow for abuse or vilification; that is, quite rightly, intolerable.

The price of freedom of speech is to have the edges of that right tested by idiots, bigots, and megalomaniacs.

If Bill Bennett is a person and has been granted a place on this forum, then he can say whatever he wants as long as it's not offensive; no matter how well or how usefully he does that.

Like all of us.

If I hadn't had a drink and exchanged some ideas. with Bill while in Auckland this week I would consider the idea of him not existing funny. But you have Google so you can find yourself.
