Hi all.

Does Geekzone support the functionality to block or in any way avoid specific user accounts? Is there a way to not show certain users posts in the forums when you are logged in?

If this does not exist currently, is it on the roadmap of features to implement?

TIA

We had lots of discussions about this before. I'd like to implement it but this wouldn't prevent you seeing someone's comment if they were quoted by another user. At the end we haven't decided on implementing this yet.

Yeah, I'd like to mute anyone who leaves short replies that are cryptic and really need explaining. That would save me the angst of deciding whether to follow potentially fruitless asides and links to some video of dubious interest.

I wouldn't see this as an impediment to implementing the feature.  Most of the problem would be resolved.  Not that I've personally felt a need for such a feature so far.

I must say there are certain avatars that when I see them I know I'm about to read something that will make me despair. Would it actually be that hard to replace ⌠quote] inflammatoryname: inflammatorytext ⌠/quote] with herpderp herpderp?

GZ has an actively enforced ruleset, and if people step outside that the mods talk to them or give them a holiday, I believe that is sufficient. If you allow blocking like this, you just turn it into an echo chamber where you only hear things you want to hear. It's really not the end of the world if someone on the internet has a different point of view to you.

Information wants to be free. The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.

You are absolutely correct. GZ & mods are doing a fantastic job in keeping GZ free from any trolling and abusive attacks. Diversity too is required. Just like @gbwelly above, I've gotten to the point where I'd rather avoid certain avatars. Two things to that point

  • Technology could make my life easier by giving me the option to skip over their comments instead of manually having to review the posters name before reading the comment. And isn't technology there to make my life easier?
  • Unlike @gbwelly, I wouldn't mind seeing the quoted text so that I know the context of the reply. If possible, you could have the option to hide/ignore an avatar with a sub-option to also ignore their comments.

@freitasm Thank you for the response. For now I will carry on with the manual way.

There are many other (in my opinion) more useful features that could be implemented so I'd be disappointed as a subscriber to see something like this implemented as priority.

I would like to just have a warning when pressing reply - "Are you sure you want to reply to this moron?" for people on a list. I forget who people are and after an annoying interaction would rather not answer their questions even if its an easy one.

Geekzone works very well as a community. With few exceptions, silly behaviour does not last long. Introducing an 'ignore' feature will change the flavour of the forums. I would expect introduction of an 'ignore' feature to increase the incidence of bad behaviour and silly behaviour below the ban level because the community will tend to ignore it.

These people are very good at staying within the FUG, otherwise they don't stick around for very long.

For example here are a few off the top of my head: There is a person who always baits people having HFC problems to get them to post an angry rant, another who hates smokers significantly more than most people, another who thinks boy racers who don't pull over for the police deserve to crash and die, one who constantly complains that everything was better in the UK and another who thinks it's common for solo mothers to keep having kids just to stay on the benefit. Engaging these people doesn't change their opinion and they sure as heck aren't going to change mine.

I like Geekzone the way it is. If I wanted to talk into an echo chamber I would join some Facebook group (I suppose I would have to join Facebook first). If I wanted to be a troll, or get abused I could comment on Stuff.

Part of having a community like this is that we are exposed to new (or at least different) ideas and points of view. It is good for us.

I certainly tend toward the right, and sometimes I don't understand how some of you hippies think... but sometimes I see a glimmer of redemption (Not saying on which side)innocent

Well said. Everyone is different and has slightly different points of views, and that is a reflection of real life.
