Many of you may have noticed that we have now moved Geekzone to a full HTTPS site. No need to explain (to most, I presume) this means enhanced privacy for you when posting and a bit more security (as in sessions shouldn't be hijacked if on an unsecure network, employers can't see what you're posting, etc).

The default policy we are enforcing now is for no mixed content. This means if a page has any element that is not served over HTTPS then that content will not appear. This also include photos you post, screenshots hosted on other non-HTTPS servers, Speedtest results, etc.

To make sure we keep everything as it should I have scrubbed our database and replaced http:// image links with https:// where possible - things like imgur, flickr, speedtest have https versions already. Some of those domains are also listed in the HTTPS Everywhere project so our CDN Cloudflare will automatically replace anything I missed when a page is served. But just in case you see something that is not right, please report the post and I will check if we can do something.

Even better, if you are not using a HTTPS service, just upload to Geekzone. If you try to post a non-HTTPS image your post will be rejected.

Thank you all!

I see Base64 copy&paste no longer works...perhaps intentionally?

What is the optimum workflow you actually recommend for adding images as via desktop & mobile as the only way I've figured out seems awfully convoluted..

Usually (previously): New post > Copy screenshot etc > Paste into post > Post Reply

When I use Geekzone uploader:

  1. New Post
  2. Scroll back up and open "Your profile" in new tab.
  3. Switch Tab
  4. Find "upload images"...
  5. Take screenshot etc.
  6. Save as file somewhere.
  7. Back to GZ upload.
  8. Choose file.
  9. Upload.
  10. Copy BB code.
  11. Switch tab.
  12. Paste BB code.
  13. Post reply.

Mobile workflow is even worse.

Even a URL to image upload page on the new post / reply page would save a few clicks.

Did you look?

When you click "New Post" you'll see it under the reply box:

When you're composing a quick reply look above:

Nice and simple... I am all for blocking pasting of images in the editor due to the fact these are not optimized and I am often browsing Geekzone on mobile. It also prevents the whole "massive page" syndrome and a mod like myself uploading it to the Geekzone to resize.

i find the biggest disadvantage and why i often dont use geekzones image system is, it is clunky and kinda arcadic to use.

seeing base64 images working in here almost pulled back on all of my imgur usage (which as above is SSL capable)

Meh. I get the good reasons for it, but you have just broken a hell of a lot of historic posts.  I guess until (if) I can be bothered upgrading my server that only serves out my weather station and pictures for forums, that I'll just post links...

Would have been good to get a heads up on the breakage before it happened.

Cheers - N

[edit - Couldn't you at least have converted old HTTP IMG links to URLs?]

You folks want security but want none of the compromise.

It is a click away to upload images. Or use some other https source. Uploading to other sites is actually more complicated because you have to browse away but it is usable.
